Happy Birthday, C.S. Lewis!

C.S. Lewis was born 114 years ago on this day in Belfast.  The C.S. Lewis Foundation sent an e-mail newsletter celebrating the birth of the author of the Chronicles of Narnia, and we thought we’d share it with you.  If you’d like to get e-mails from the Foundation, sign up here.

On this day and every day we celebrate the life and legacy of C.S. Lewis  – born November 29, 1898 in Belfast to Albert J. Lewis and Flora August Hamilton Lewis.

In celebrating his birthday today, we offer two quotes from Lewis – one on loving God and one on loving our neighbors:

“If you continue to love Jesus, nothing much can go wrong with you, and I hope you may always do so” (Letters to Children).

“Friendship is something that raised us almost above humanity. This love, free from instinct, free from all duties but those which love has freely assumed, almost wholly free from jealousy, and free without qualification from the need to be needed, is eminently spiritual. It is the sort of love one can imagine between angels” (The Four Loves).

We also celebrate the birth of another kindred spirit and cherished friend, the late Madeliene L’Engle (November 29, 1918, in New York City).
