The Narnia Effect: Fans of movie succumb to a sweet delicacy

Film audiences this past weekend discovered in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe that main character Edmund’s beastly behavior begins with his temptation by the White Witch and her magical Turkish delight candies.

Now, the magic of Narnia has the treats disappearing from the shelves of a local store that specializes in British goods.

Originally named lokum, the cubed candies are a hot commodity at the British Emporium in Grapevine, co-owners Sheela Kadam and Alexandra Evans said.

“We call it the Narnia effect,” Kadam said. Calls have come in from across the country seeking Turkish delight, a confection that has long been a favorite in Great Britain, she said.

Kadam and Evans described it in an e-mail as a “soft, rose and lemon flavoured sweetmeat candy covered with confectioners sugar.” Sweetmeat is candied fruit, according to Webster’s New World Dictionary.
