Interview with Future of Forestry: A NarniaFans.com Exclusive

A week and a half ago, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing the lead singer of a favorite band of mine: Future of Forestry.  I had contacted them over two years ago to set up an interview, and only recently were we able to get one worked out.  I had the help of Mark Ostley of Middle-Earth Network to conduct and record the interview.

We take you through the history of the band so far, their philosophy of music writing and give you samples of their music.  For the band, passion drives their songwriting, and you can tell.

If anyone wants to write up a transcript for us, let me know ASAP.  Transcript is written and will be posted soon.

I’ve been very excited to run this interview for over two years, and I hope that you find the music of Future of Forestry as incredible as I do.

If you’re wondering what they have to do with Narnia, well, the name of the band comes from the name of a poem by Narnia author C.S. Lewis.  A poem called “The Future of Forestry.”

“How will the legend of the age of trees Feel, when the last tree falls in England? When the concrete spreads and the town conquers The country’s heart; when contraceptive Tarmacs laid where farm has faded”

So begins the C.S. Lewis poem that San Diego quartet Future of Forestry cribbed its name from. In it Lewis describes an England overtaken by industrialization but the band sees it as more than just an environmental warning.

“It’s not about saving trees but about saving our lives from being taken over by technology,” frontman Eric Owyoung said. “It’s about asking if we are still able to see beauty.” Anyone who gets their hands on Future of Forestry’s debut album “Twilight” should be able to find it embedded throughout the album.
