Breaking! Mark Gordon to produce The Silver Chair

The Silver Chair AnnouncedIt’s news that we have all been waiting for, and it’s just broken loose.  The Mark Gordon Company is going to be producing The Silver Chair.  Mark Gordon will be producing the film.  There is no news, yet about cast members, directors or release dates, but it’s coming.

Update: Here’s the press release:

The C.S. Lewis Company has entered into an agreement with The Mark Gordon Company to jointly develop and produce The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair, the fourth book published in C.S. Lewis’ famed fantasy series. The announcement was made today by The C.S. Lewis Company.

Mark Gordon stated, “Like many readers, both young and old, I am a huge fan of C.S. Lewis’s beautiful and allegorical world of Narnia. These fantasy stories inspire real-world passion among millions of devoted fans around the world. As we prepare to bring the next book to life, we are humbled and excited to contribute to the outstanding legacy of Narnia.”

Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis stated, “I have a great deal of respect for Mark Gordon’s work and am confident that together we can bring the beauty and magical delight that Narnia engenders in the hearts of those who read the books to the screen in ‘The Silver Chair.’ I am very much looking forward to diving once more into Narnia, this time with Mark Gordon and his team.”

Mark Gordon and Douglas Gresham along with Vincent Sieber, the LA based Director of The C.S. Lewis Company, will serve as producers and work with The Mark Gordon Company on developing the script. Michele Wolkoff and Sara Smith will oversee for The Mark Gordon Company.

Vincent Sieber stated, “We are very excited by this partnership and to be able to work on this movie from its earliest conception on such a collaborative basis. It gives us the opportunity to develop a script and then produce a film with some of the most talented industry professionals whilst remaining completely faithful to this much loved book.”

The first three Narnia films combined have grossed over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office.

A classic series of seven novels that have sold over 100 million copies worldwide, C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” began with the publication of “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” in 1950. Six more novels (including the prequel, “The Magician’s Nephew,” and the sequels, “The Horse and His Boy,” “Prince Caspian,” “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” “The Silver Chair” and “The Last Battle”) would follow in the next six years. The final title in the series, “The Last Battle,” was awarded the highest mark of excellence in children’s literature, the prestigious Carnegie Award.

The announcement also came this morning from the official Narnia twitter and facebook pages.

  1. YEEESSSS! I am so happy that SC will be the next Narnia film! I really like some of Mark Gordon Company’s other works, so I have high hopes for Narnia! Actually, I’m just so happy to have some official news! 🙂

    • Amen to that!! Finally some official news :)and that’s all I need for now:)Its almost 3 years since VDT came out. And from then on, we’ve been waiting..just waiting 😀

  2. You know, I’m supposed to be studying for a college test in the afternoon. But I can’t anymore because I’m too excited for this.

  3. I never heard of this company, but it seems the series is progressing downward in terms of company. I know it isn’t always a bad thing, but that’s just a weird feeling I’m getting. I hope Will Poulter, Liam Neeson, and Ben Barnes will stay for Silver Chair. Overall, I’m happy that we will be getting a fourth Narnia film.

    • i totally agree, i found that they all played the roles wonderfully. plus, will poulter really fits the role of eustace, i’d hate to see him replaced!

  4. In my opinion they should go with The Magician’s Nephew, then Silver and Last Battle. It’s a great way to re-introduce / rebirth and I guess, “reboot” the franchise. Taking place between Voyage and The Silver Chair, have the movie begin with Digory telling the story to Eustace, Peter and Edmund (and maybe Jill). From there the movie takes off. And when it ends, it goes back to Digory closing the story by letting it end as a cliffhanger to the Silver Chair. That way, you’re letting the audience remember that the next two books (especially Silver) will have Eustace in them.

I say this because Narnia lacks a consistent character, as they switch after 3 books to Jill and Eustace, let alone the two prequels.

      • I personally think “The Horse and His Boy” would perfectly fit between “The Dawn Treader” and “The Silver Chair” since it takes place during the reign of the four high kings and queens having grown into adulthood in Narnia. That would match the current age of their four actors in real life. But perhaps some of HHB’s contents might not be viewed at as political correct and risking some sort of tensions, lol.

  5. Yay!!!!! I’m so excited!!!
I really hope they keep Will Poulter for Eustace. He fit the character perfectly in the Voyage of the Dawn Treader!

    • I don’t think we will be seeing the next film next year because it will take a lot of time to get through the process. They have just barely started working on the script right now. Then it will be some editing, budget calculations, locations, casting and getting actors back. Then the actual acting/filming along with all the editing, visual effects, costumes, trailers, posters, etc. It will probably released either in 2015 or 2016. The process now a days is a lot faster I’m sure, but it will still take at least two years.

      • Yeah definitely not this year. I wouldn’t expect it until at least 2016. (but I have no idea what their plans are). It could be later than that depending on how well the production goes.

For an example, the Hobbit film was announced just like this back in 2007. It was originally planned for a 2010 release (so a three year process). This was pushed back 2 years, because the filmmakers ran into some serious delays. Hopefully things go more smoothly with this production and it is released in December 2016!

        • Hey this is cool! If our guesses are right and if the tentative (or is it rumored) released date for Star Wars holds up, the schedule for the upcoming Decembers will look like this:

          – Dec. 2013: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
          – Dec. 2014: The Hobbit: There and Back Again
          – Dec. 2015: Star Wars: Episode 7
          – Dec. 2016: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair

Haha! Sorry to be such a nerd, but these are my three favorite fantasy movie series ever and I can’t help but get excited that their all getting new installments so close together. 😀

          • They’re mine too! Also the sequel to Finding Nemo (Finding Dory)will be released in 2015! I’m so excited for all of them. I hope the new Star Wars film turns out alright though.

  6. Thank goodness! Now I can’t wait to see what happens with casting, etc. Will was incredible as Eustace, but now he’s quite a bit older! I hope they can still find a way to work with him.

      • My cousin and I once thought the Green Witch was the White Witch having not really died in LWW, but the texts and fans have proven otherwise.

      • But if the White Witch is Tilda Swinton would be more interesting for the audience (and the box office)

        • You mean green witch? So? I could care less what filmmakers think will make narnia more interesting for audiences after seeing dawn treader. I like to think c.s. Lewis knew how to write a good book and that green mist as a villain or the white witch as the green which wasn’t in the books because c.s. Lewis had working brain cells.

  7. Paul, do we know if Disney or Walden Media are invovled or is it just the Mark Gordon company?

    • Whoa! Hey man! Long time! Currently, the only company that we know for sure is involved is the Mark Gordon Company. Wish I knew more, but that’s basically it.

      • Ok cool. I’m looking forward to hearing more info! A new film will be exciting!

Hope all’s well with you and yours!

  8. Honestly, I’m glad they are making a another movie, but I’m not sure if doing the Silver Chair is a good move.

For one I think Mark Gordon Company will have to really change it in order to get enough money in the box office in order to continue afterword.

I think VDT was already disappointing, it wasn’t very true to the book ( Although it was pretty cool I guess).

Then again, maybe they will do a good job. Only one way to find out.
Still I think it is a risk and that they should have done something a little more exciting, maybe HB or MN…I think that would have really been cool to see and might draw more people in…then they could continue.
    So that’s how I feel…

  9. Well, I don’t know, some of the movies he produced look good (Patriot) and at least he’s a fan of Narnia (unlike that guy, which made VDT terrible), so I hope we will see comeback to the style of original movies, which I watch over and over again.

  10. HOLY CRAP. FINALLY. OH MY GOSH I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS TO HAPPEN
I want to audition for Jill Pole!

  11. At last the silvery rain is falling and the drought regarding all news about the next instalment for another Narnia film has finally being broken. Best regards to those all involved with the next stage of planning.

  12. I was really excited to see this!

I had a feeling there might be some news for a new Narnia movie when I checked the site, it seemed that it had been building up lately with Douglas Gresham being very confident about the films and all. It appears I’m 10 days late to the news though. 😛

    So what, 2016, 17? I can’t wait!
