Project Seeks to Establish Tolkien Center at Author’s Former House

In a house on the green there lived a Tolkien. Here on 20 Northmoor Rd. is the home where J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The home already is recognized with a blue plaque for its historic and cultural significance, but fans are crowd sourcing funds to buy the home and convert it into the world’s first J.R.R. Tolkien Center. J.R.R. Tolkien had a profound impact on Narnia’s author C.S. Lewis, but if this project is successful it could also set an example for what could be done to make a C.S. Lewis center for his home The Kilns.

Neighborhood planning rules limit the property’s use as residential, so the project will not be establishing a Tolkien museum inside the home. The planned use is to preserve the home and allow its use for courses, retreats, and short stays. The cost to purchase the home is £4,000,000 with additional restoration expenses expected, but the group has already acquired 9% of their crowdfunding goal. Any gifts over £20 will be recognized with a certificate and name printed in a book to be kept in Tolkien’s study.
