On a drizzly Golders Green day in 1998, Miss Seraph Jane Swift, clad in a slicker, was walking toward an apothecary store. The old music-hall song "On the Old Kent Road" was persistently replaying in her head. At least this was less distressing than her dream of the previous night: she had dreamt that she had a chance to prevent Princess Diana's death, but no one would listen to her.
