Hello there, I'm homeschooled and I want to work with lions or other big cats in a zoo as a career when I'm older. I will be starting my first year of highschool this year. I am going to have my curriculum based around animals in zoos. So I'll being doing history of zoo animals, my writing will be all about the different zoo animals, and so on. The only problem is I can't find any textbooks for animals behavior and other things I will need for the subject. I found this book, does anyone it would be a good book to use? http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Defini...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217893582&sr=8-1 If anyone has any suggestions, please reply on here, it would really help because I want to start my school as early as possible this year. Thank you. Elsamere

Well, you see, I can't just use wiki for all that stuff. I need textbooks and things like that. Wiki doesn't help for lion info because I already know more about lions than they have on there. So, it's probably not even the best place for any other zoo animal info anyway. Plus, I'm doing the animal behavior, not just random facts about them. Thanks for the help anyway!!

I know of college textbooks for zoology, but not high school books! I don't know any high schools that study animals so intently! You will probably find it very difficult to find textbooks, for your age!

Are the college textbooks you know of on any websites where I could check them out? I'm sure I could do the college textbook, maybe not in one year but one could probably count as two credits for high school science. It's just that working at a zoo with lions is something I really want to do so I think it's kinda dumb that I should have to do school work that I will never need in my career such as early American history or regular science.

I know what you mean Elsa. I have lots of fun finding resourse material for my intrests too. I wish I could help. We get all our stuff from Canada though. And I don't know any websites about animal behavior.:(

Perhaps you or your parent teacher could talk with a curriculum coodinator if you are in an ISP (or a PSP or whatever it's been changed to). If you're not in such a group or co-op, I would suggest sending out an email to other homeschooled families in your area.

Also, about having to study subjects you deem useless... It may seem time-consuming and silly if you aren't planning to go into it, but in (I assume you're in the US) America/your state, the core subjects (math, science, english, etc.) are required to be completed in order to graduate from high school, whether you're public, private, or home schooled. And if you're planning to go into zoology, science (biology, espcially) and math will definitely be beneficial for you.

Not to be a noob or anything, but I admit that I'm a little surprised to find you're looking for curricula in August. Most homeschoolers order/purchase curriculum in the spring or early summer. Anyways.... I don't know if I helped at all...

Thank you for the help. I think we've finished finding my books. These are what I've picked.

Awesome African Wildlife
Integrated Principles of Zoology
The Serengeti Lion
Zoology by Stephen A. Miller
Animal: The Definitive Visual Guide of the Worlds Wildlife
A Dictionary of Zoology(Oxford)
Animal Diversity
Prentice Hall Science Explorer: Animal
Talking to Animals: Can They Really Understand Us?
Amazing Animal Adventures Around The World

And I am of course gonna read every Joy and George Adamson book. I've learned so many things just from reading a few of their books.

Oh and Ben, I'm a Dragon Rider too on the website!!
