Jane Austen Club

I need to read that.
I remember one time when my friend and I went around speaking in British accents and calling each other Mrs. Darcy (me) and Mrs. Bingley (her). It was funny... and people kept looking at us like we were crazy...

You really should read "Emma" (I assume that's what you're talking about). :p The characters are so quirky, but they're real. :D They're just exaggerations of what people are really like. It's amazing how Jane Austen could pick out things like that about people. She must have really been a people-watcher. :p

I liked Emma very much, though my favorite is still "Sense and Senisibility" I think...

On the other hand, we just got a copy of that lovely "Pride & Prejudice" that was filmed and the music alone is enough to sweep me away. Wonderful. I was quite pleased with how closely it followed the original book, I'm always afraid they'll try to 'modernize' something like Austen and make it unrecognizable.

Are you talking about the newest "Pride and Prejudice?"

If the newest one is the one with Keira Knightly in it. I was impressed with her acting, actually - my only other exposure to her was in the first PotC film. The additional years of experience show.

Yes, that's the one. I love the music in that version, too. :D It's probably my favorite movie soundtrack. I read somewhere that they wanted to create music that was similar to the music that Jane Austen and her family would have really listened to. The soundtrack is just lovely.

We need to revive our Jane Austen thread! :p Has anyone read/seen anything Austen lately?

I watched "Becoming Jane" again today, hoping I would like it. Once again, I didn't.

I was at a Barnes and Noble recently and noticed the popularity of the rather bizarre adaptation, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"... the same folks are apparently also doing a "Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters"... now that they are public domain I suppose we can expect all sorts of oddness.

Someone started a whole online forum JUST about the single most satisfying (to me, at least) relationship in Jane Austen's whole body of work: the air-headed Marianne Dashwood and the noble-hearted Colonel Brandon. The site was called "BESOTTED," after a line spoken in the Emma Thompson film about the good Colonel. I tried to join, but nothing happened. Maybe they've shut down operations.

I've seen those online. I'm sure they're quite wonderful...classic literature. :p

memorable characters

I have a personal theory about what makes a great story, and one of the key elements is believable change or growth (hopefully for the better) in characters you come to care about. Certainly Austen's world if filled with such heroines especially :)

But even if the supporting characters don't really change, they are so deliciously drawn that they become memorable in their own right --
* the pompous silliness of Mr Collins (P&P)
* the controlling supercilious airs of Lady Catherine (P&P)
* the coldly prim, calculating Fanny (S&S)

Who are some of your most memorable minors?

^I personally love the guy in Sense and Sensilbility...the one whose wife is really loud and obnoxious and he's always muttering about her.:p Can't think of his name.

Is it Mr. Palmer? I think that's his name. He's quite rude to his wife, but I agree that she's very tiring!

I love Jane austen's books. Especially "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility"!
Lots of fun characters. My favourite is Mr. Collins! He's delightfully ridiculous and silly. Love the BBC series with Colin Firth as Darcy, and David Bamber as Mr. Collins. DB is fabulous!! :D

I also like the "Sense and Sensibility" film with Emma Thompson, and Alan Rickman as a great Colonel Brandon. Everybody is casted so well in that film, I think. A delight to watch.

Jane Austen was a genius! :)

^Yes that sounds right. I think he's hilarious.:p

I love that version of "S & S".:D And the Gweneth Paltrow version of Emma.:D

I never cared for Pride and Prejudice though, the book or any of the 3 film versions I've seen...Darcy disturbs me.

As for minor characters, I just love Miss Bates from "Emma." She's so realistic. I have a bachelor great-uncle who talks just like her. :p

And who could forget Mr. Collins?
