Jane Austen Club

reading advice, anyone?

For those who are Austen readers, what order do you recommend reading her books?

That's a good question! I haven't read "Persuasion" or "Northanger Abbey," but I know something about their plots. My tentative recommendation of a reading order would be:

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (not at all because I like it best, nor even because it's the best known, but because it gives a good view of the stratified society Jane Austen lived in and wrote about)

EMMA

MANSFIELD PARK

PERSUASION

NORTHANGER ABBEY
(in which Miss Austen is said to have indulged in some parody)

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (best for last!!!!!!)

re: reading plan

Thanks for your advice, Copperfox. I just ordered P&P unabridged audio so I can listen to it while driving around or doing housework :)

Has anyone ever read the biography about Jane Austen by Claire Tomalin? I know there isn't much known about her life, but I've been in a Austenish mood lately and really want to read something about her. I've got the book "Just Jane," which I love, but I would like to try something different. I think the book is called "Jane Austen: A Life." Has anyone read it?

I have Austen on the brain, as I took a Facebook quiz yesterday called "Who do you end up with in a Jane Austen book?" According to the quiz, I would end up with Mr. Darcy. I was rather disappointed! While I like all of Austen's men, if I had to rank them, Darcy would probably be towards the bottom of my list. Choosing a favorite is harder. Maybe Henry Tilney. He's a sweet guy, and I love his sense of humor! Captain Wentworth is pretty high up there, too, though. I absolutely love the letter he writes!

I took that quiz a while ago and got Charles Bingley from Pride And Prejudice. I wanted Knightley.*sighs* :p

As a guy, I don't have to take that quiz; instead, I simply declare that I want to BE Colonel Brandon. That is, I want to be like him in character and merit, even if I never get rewarded as he did.

I looove Jane Austen books, especially Pride and Prejudice ;)
is such a wonderful book; it doesn't mean that i don't like the others,
but this one has a "special thing" that makes me want it more.
for me is one of the best ever, or at least that is how i feel! :p
maybe is because i like books that mix impossible loves and happy endings *w*
I really think that she is an excellent writer :)

Colonel Brandon is a great character to aspire to be like!

But which of Austen's heroines would you want to end up with? (Now, I'm wondering if there's a quiz out there for guys. There's plenty of them for girls, either determining who you end up with or which heroine you're most like!)

I'm reviving our poor Jane Austen thread, in honor of the beginning of the new "Emma" mini-series that airs on PBS tonight. Or at least Part 1 does, in about 20 minutes. I want to see what everyone thinks of it! :D

Oooh I'm going to watch it too!

I'll miss Ewan McGregor as Mr. Churchill though ;)

I don't really have time to read at the moment but this is so very exciting. I have read P&P but that is it I have the all in one book (it has all of her books including the letters story...can't recall the name.) and I hope to start reading it soon. I'm so glad you revived it! I'm recording it on our DVR so my mom and I can watch it later in the week :)

Meanwhile, I've had no luck trying to find a copy of the NEWEST version of Sense and Sensibility.

Are you talking about this one?

I love "Emma" so far! I can't wait until next Sunday. :D The casting was perfect, although it took me a little while to get used to the new Mr. Knightley. Emma is just like I imagined her when I first read the book, and I love Michael Gambon as Mr. Woodhouse. All of the other characters (especially Harriet, Mr. Elton, Miss Bates) are absolutely perfect. And the movie has a unique sort of feel (kind of like 2005 P&P) that makes it seem more magical and lovely than the older versions (like 1995 P&P and Emma). The music is nice, and the scenery is beautiful. I'm definitely planning on ordering it when it's available. :)

Thank you, yes, that's the one!

Michael Gambon, eh? I'm pretty sure he was also in Amazing Grace with Ioan Gruffud.

And a lot of people on here would know Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, I admit it's hard to think of him apart from the part ;)

Emma's amazing, she was good in both Nicholas Nickleby and Amazing Grace. Mr. Elton is sufficiently annoying, I saw him in Mansfield Park. Mr. Knightly is a little... reserved, as is Mr. Churchill but I'm hoping to see better from them. Harriet was fine, and Mrs. Bates was good, if a little quiet (oddly enough ;))

Yes, Dumbledore. When I first saw him, I couldn't help but think of how strange he looked minus the long hair, beard, and half-moon spectacles. :p I love his voice, though. He has a very distinct voice.

Yes he does, and it is very weird to see him without them but I saw him in Amazing Grace, he's really great in that one :D
