Jane Austen Club

I may try that one. For myself, I have had a hard time reading the P&P spinoffs because they always try to recreate the Austin flair but cannot and in the process completely destory the story by trying to make it appeal to the moderjn romance reading crowd. Why can't people see that Jane did not write out all the steamy little details for a reason, and it was not because she had never experienced love or life after marriage, though it is true that she never experienced marriage, it was not that that prevented her from talking about it, rather the steamy stuff was left out because had she written it in there she would have never gained a readership because her books would have been considered filth that a respectable house-hold would be ashamed to have near their houses.

I know what you mean...do *not* read Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife! Pure, unadulterated smut. I couldn't even get past the first couple of chapters, and I'm married :D.

The " Darcy: a Gentleman" series is okay, it has its great moments and its not so great moments.

I just saw a commercial on the local PBS station.:DSupposidly theres brand new adaptations of all 6 of Jane Austen's novels coming out as movies in January.I hope Mansfield Park,Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion are good..I haven't been able to find good film versions of those yet.:)

Really? Are they going to be shown on PBS or on another channel?

Has anyone read "Austenland" by Shannon Hale? She's wrote some great fairy tale books, and since I love Austen, I thought I would read it. It's pretty good. It's about a young woman obsessed with Austen (especially Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy). When her aunt dies, she leaves her a trip to a resort in England where everyone behaves as if it's 1816, so she decides to go and have one last bit of fun before she gives up Austen and men in general. It wasn't quite as good as I expected, but still pretty good.

They're starting tonight on my PBS station, too. :D I think Persuasion is coming on tonight, and that's the only Austen book I haven't read yet. So I'm taping it, and I'll watch it after I read my copy. But I'm planning to watch them every Sunday, so I'm really excited. Especially about Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey.

Aren't they doing a drama type thing about Jane Austen's life, too?

i know im behind the times, but i actually got around to watching pride and predjudice for teh first time last night lol:rolleyes:

"Northanger Abbey" this Sunday and "Mansfield Park" the next! :D I'm so excited.

And "Miss Austen Regrets" is a drama based on the life and letters of Jane Austen, according to the PBS website. It comes on February 3rd here. :)

^:DI might have the same PBS.
I'm going to watch Northanger Abbey..I hope its better than the other version I saw years ago...

:cool:I'd like to see that too.

Have you read "Just Jane" by Nancy Moser? Its a bio-fiction of Jane Austen's life, and I liked it.:)

She also did an amazing book called "Mozart's Sister".

I've never seen any version of Northanger Abbey or Mansfield Park, so I'll have nothing to compare the PBS ones to, LOL. :)

I saw "Just Jane" in the local Christian bookstore catalogue, and I saw it in the store, but I haven't got to read it yet. One branch of the library has it, and my aunt works there, so I'm going to try to get her to get it for me. :D

I saw 2 versions of Mansfield Park, and 1 of Northanger Abbey....the first 2 were ..erm...inappropriate....and the other was boring...:p

I hope you like the book. *smile*Its more of a biography than fiction, but I thought it was interesting.:)

Biography sounds good to me. :) I love learning more about her life.

I can't wait until 9:00 tonight. :p

I watched the new Pride and Prejudice (my absolute favorite movie) again the other night and fell in love with the story all over again. :D I really need to read the book again. But first I'm going to read "Persuasion", the only Austen book I haven't read yet. And after I read it, I've got the Masterpiece Theater movie that I taped to watch. :)

Yeah, parts of it were unappropriate. :( But everyone was pretty much how I pictured them to be from the book. They got John (that's his name, right?) Thorpe down especially well. Just as rude and annoying as he was in the book.

To begin with, they can be a little hard to understand. The first time I ever read "Pride and Prejudice", which was my first Austen book, I had to read several parts more than once to understand them, and I had to constantly refer to the notes in the back of the book, LOL. :) But after you've read a few of her books, and you get used to how things were worded then and what certain phrases mean, then it's not hard at all. Still, I'm glad when they have notes to help out some.

I'm a little ways into "Persuasion" now, and it's my last Austen book. After that, I'm probably going to reread "Pride and Prejudice" or "Emma", or that book "Just Jane", if I can get it. :D

I've been faithfully watching the Jane Austen series, and I must admit I absolutely love it. :D
My fave so far is Northanger Abbey ... I completely fell in love with Henry Tilney.

OH! I forgot to mention!! Next time any of you watch Northanger Abbey, be sure to look closely at Katherine's family. At the beginning, a little brown-haired boy sits on Katherine's mum's lap. He's Katherine's little brother, and appears in most of the home scenes, but never speaks a word. That's because he's supposed to be British in the movie, but in real life he has an Irish brogue!!
His name is Michael and he used to go to my church ... in fact I used to baby-sit him. I was thrilled when I saw him! :D

Did you like Mansfield Park that played yesterday?
I just couldn't get into it,for some reason.........

I taped it, and I just got around to watching it. I thought it was really good. My TV doesn't tape very clearly, so I was squinting trying to see it good. :p I think it's a really sweet story, even though I have a hard time getting over the fact that it's two cousins falling in love. I guess it was different then, though. And I was a little surprised they left out the part where Fanny visits her family.

By the way, I love your avvy. :D

We got our new Family Christian Store catalogue the other day, and it had a new Jane Austen book in it. I think it's called "A Walk with Jane Austen" or something like that. I think it's nonfiction, but I'm not sure. Has anyone heard about it? I can't remember the author.
