Jane Austen Club

Have you seen that they have made a complete hardcover volume of all of Jane Austen's works!

I haven't seen that. It must be thick, LOL.

Well, tonight is "Miss Austen Regrets." Anyone watching it? I'm so excited about seeing it. I almost thought I would miss it, because my TV doesn't pick up PBS and my dad was watching the Superbowl on the other TV :)rolleyes:), but he went to bed instead of watching it all...so now I'm taping the movie on their TV. :D

I'm about halfway through with reading "Persuasion." :) I like it a lot so far.

They are making movie called the Jane Austen Club, but it looks a like it's full of vanity and inapproperate themes.

Wow! I'm joining this club!! :D I love the Regency Era and especially Austen!

I've read Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abby and Mansfield Park. I've started, but not finished, Emma and Sense and Sensibility.
I really liked Northanger Abby and I've read it twice. I think it's the easiest Austen of those I've read.

I've seen:
-the 1940's P&P and I love it! I'd like to see the others too though.
-the 2007 Persuasion and I loved it too! Wentworth is awesome!
-2007 Northanger Abby. Cute, it was okay(didn't like the added content), but I like the book better. Tilney was really great.
-2007 Mansfield Park. I liked it, but again not as much as the book. I like Billie Piper though so that helped.
-1995 Emma. LOVE EMMA!!! :D "I may call you my Mr. Knightly!!"
-1995 Sense and Sensibility. Wonderful movie, great cast and script!

I started Miss Austen Regrets, but I didn't finish it. I taped it so I might watch it later.
I too am really enjoying Masterpiece Theater's Complete Jane Austen. :)

Okay, you all have to read this book!!! It's called The Jane Austen Handbook: A sensible yet elegant guide to her world by Margaret C. Sullivan. I got it from the library last week and it's really great!

A really good site. If you go to the forum, I'm LadyPearl. :)

Someone else who loves the 40s Pride and Prejudice!!!!!
I watched the one with Kiera Knightley, and just couldn't get into it.But i absolutely love the one with Greer Garson

Oh I really do! Its so funny! And I really like Sir Laurence as Darcy! I know that a lot of people don't, but I really do! :D
That movie was actually my first introduction to Jane Austen, and the whole reason that I started reading her books! :)

I taped "Miss Austen Regrets," and when I had watched about 30 minutes of it, the tape suddenly went bad. It got black and white and all jumpy and the sound was skipping, so I couldn't even watch the rest of it. But what I had seen so far, I didn't think was too great.

I saw the 1940's Pride and Prejudice in a FYE Store the other day, and I was going to get it, but it was $20, and I thought that was a little too much.

I would like to hear how everybody first got introduced to Jane Austen. :D I saw a preview for the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, so I decided that I wanted to see it. But I wanted to read the book first, so I did, and I liked it a lot. After the book, I saw the movie, and fell in love with it (it's been my favorite movie ever since), then I borrowed the BBC version from the library and watched it, and everything has snowballed since. :p

NotATameLion,
I thought the same thing about Miss Austen Regrets. Mom didn't want to see it because I already told her that Jane Austen never married... she said that was crummy! :p I have it taped, but I don't know if I'll watch it.

Secondly, don't get P&P at fye!!! That's a great store for things that you can't find elsewhere, but you can get P&P from walmart.com for much cheaper (I think it was 15$ or so). I bought it for mom for Christmas! :D

Anyway, I was introduced to Austen by the 40's P&P which my mom had taped off of PBS. It was kind of ironic, because I'm now far more the Austen fan than she is! (But I'm winning her over! ;))

Don't worry, I'm not getting it from there. Their prices are ridiculous. I don't believe I've ever bought anything from there. :p

I decided to watch the BBC Pride and Prejudice again, since it's been a while since I've seen it. I got through the first disc (about half of the movie) today, and I'll have to finish it another day. I like this version because it's very exact and close to the book, but I still think it can't even be compared to the 2005 movie. Matthew MacFayden is the perfect Darcy, much better than Colin Firth. :D But that's not the only reason I like it better. ;)

Becoming Jane is out on DVD today, I have held it in my hands but I did not have the money to purchase it at the time.

I rented "Becoming Jane" today and watched it this evening. I had high expectations and expected it to be a wonderful, sweet, romantic movie. And I was let down.

Let me explain myself. First of all, I felt like everyone spoke low in the movie and I had to rewind many parts to even understand what they were saying, and I still missed a lot. I feel like I need to watch it again to get everything, but since it has to go back tomorrow, I won't be able to rewatch it for a while probably. So that could be a big part of it. Also, I just didn't like the Tom Lefroy character. It's hard for me to get into a romantic movie when I think the leading man is annoying, disrespectful, and unappropriate most of the time (he was sweet sometimes). I kept wondering through the movie, how could Jane really like/love this guy?

Maybe I'm being too harsh. It was a good movie, but I was still disappointed. Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy were wonderful in it, and there were some very great parts in the movie. The ending was in particular one of my favorite scenes, and it made me like Tom Lefroy a lot more.

Anyway, I'm not trying to ruin the movie for anyone, or to offend anyone who liked it! I just was disappointed and wished they had changed or left out a few things. It didn't feel like the couple fit together to me, so I couldn't really cheer for them. :( I will hopefully get to see it again very soon and maybe it'll grow on me.

I'm sorry Lava. Do you think that it's a pretty good movie then?

NaTL, I take it that you don't reccomend it.

I didn't want to come across as too harsh, but I guess I might have. I do recommend it, I think every Jane Austen fan should see it. A lot of people will probably like it. Maybe it's one of those things that has to grow on you (or on me, at least). :p

No, you didn't seem harsh, just disappointed. It might be one that you have to see a couple times... I've seen a few movies like that! Didn't care for it the first time... loved it the second! :D

NATL:I wouldn't see Becoming Jane because of content, but I wish they'd made it clean. If so,I would have liked to see a biodrama of JA's life.:)

I have a question? You like the Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightley, right?:)I tried it,and had a very hard time understanding it,or following the movie.:eek:Does it get easier to understand the second time you see it?Or was it just me?

It's not just you, although some of the choices for scenery are just lovely :). I still prefer the BBC version with Colin Firth, but that's just me.

Yeah, that version of Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Jane Austen movie, my favorite version of Pride and Prejudice, and my favorite movie ever. :p It's perfect. I'm not sure, because I read the book before I saw the movie. It is a little jumpy, though, especially if you haven't read the book. But I think you should give it another try (even though I'm partial, LOL).

The 2005 version and the BBC version are both very good, but in different ways. If you've never read the book (I think you said you've only read a little of it, right?), then you should probably see the BBC version first. It follows along very closely with the book, almost exactly with it. So if you watch it, then you can learn everything that's in the book but that's left out in the new version. That's why it lasts almost 6 hours, LOL. But I like the new one better, for these reasons: the characters fit perfectly with how I imagined them; the scenery is beautiful; the music is incredible; it's funny; the chemistry between Darcy and Lizzie is adorable and real; and there are so many romantic moments, even if some of them are subtle. Matthew Macfadyen can show so much emotion in his eyes. The "almost kiss" during the first proposal, the way he smiles at Lizzie when she meets Georgiana, and the scene where they meet as the sun is rising...Gosh. He makes me swoon, not Colin Firth (although I do admit that the second half of the BBC version is much better than the first half and he is very good in it).

Well, I probably didn't answer your question very well, because I got way off topic. But Mr. Darcy can do that to you. :p I just watched "Pride and Prejudice" again this evening, by the way, so that's why everything I love about it is so fresh in my mind. :)

sw: I've seen 1.5 hours of the BBC because right now they're playing it on PBS in increments. So far, it's okay, but the old one is way better! And funnier. I'm involved in it now, so I'll finish it and if by that time you still haven't seen it, I'll give you my complete opinion. :) (Ps. I don't think Colin Firth is really much cause for smelling salts... but that's just me!:p)

NATL: I'd really like to see the new one, I'll let you know what I think if I get to. I tried to get for Valentines day, because Mom doesn't want to see it and she was gone, but the library has a long waiting list! :) I take that back... the computer tells me that its now in transit so I might get to see it next week. I also put in for Becoming Jane, I'm number 224.

Inkling: In all fairness, it is the closest to the book, and I like it, just not as well as the other. :) (IMO)
But my opinion might change after I see the whole thing!
