Jane Austen Club

:)I haven't seen the BBC one,but I'd like to.:)

I'm so silly! I just remembered earlier today that last Sunday, this Sunday, and the Sunday after they're playing the BBC version on PBS as part of the Jane Austen Masterpiece series! I know somebody has already mentioned it now, but I had meant to tell you, so you could watch it if you wanted to. I was rambling on about the movies and it completely slipped my mind that they're playing it on PBS, LOL. Of course, I guess it's too late now, because Sunday will be part 2 of 3, so you've already missed part of it.

Wow, Becomming Jane has nothing to do with what the story was in her memoirs. It disgusts me, I am sorry that I bought it. In her memoirs, Jane's nephew writes that she had met a man on a summer trip and that Jane had wanted to continue the acquaintance but that he had died shortly after she had left the place that she had been at.

We just picked up Becoming Jane today. I saw ito n the plane and it was great.
Thanks SirG. I've love to hear some more thoughts on it if you have time.

I'm sorry that you were so disappointed. Thanks for telling us.
LOL,thats okay..I'll probably just borrow it from the library.
That would be just as well, then you can see it all at once, instead of wait all week like I am!! :D

I got this book from the library the other day called "A Portrait of Jane Austen", by David Cecil. The author is the president of the Jane Austen Society, so I figure it should be pretty accurate. Our library only has 2 biographies of Jane Austen, and I couldn't get into the other one, so I'm giving this one a try. I haven't started reading it yet, but I've skimmed it, and it seems to not just be an ordinary biography of her, but to be written as more of a story (like that book "Just Jane"). Anyway, it looks like it will be interesting, and it seems to have a lot of information not just about her, but about the world she lived in, so I'm looking foward to starting it. :D

I think it's interesting that Anne Hathaway, who plays Jane in Becoming Jane wrote her college thesis on Miss Austen, re-read all her works to prepare for the role, and even did outside research.

I finished reading "Persuasion" about a week ago, and that was my last Jane Austen book to read. I liked it very much. :) It was probably my 3rd favorite book out of all six. I have the Masterpiece Theater movie taped, but I haven't got to watch it yet. Maybe tomorrow night I can. I'm looking foward to seeing it. :D

That's a great book to finish with, since it was one of her last books to write. There's a *very* definite change in style :).

Oh yes! Do see it when you can! I loved it and it's one of my favorites (maybe the favorite) on MT so far! Even though I only saw the last hour... and then I accidentally taped over that!!! :(
But that's okay, I hope to get it for my birthday... or order it myself from walmart! :p

Anne: "I am in receipt of your proposal, and am inclined to accept it."

Captian Wentworth: "Are... you... sure?"

Anne: "I am determined. And nothing, you may be sure, will ever persuade me other wise!"

Oh I just love that!!!

Anyway, it's actually the only Austen that I don't have. I need to finish Sense and Sensibility and Emma! I had a hard time reading them, especially Emma.

I watched it this evening, and I liked it very much. :D It was probably my favorite of all the Masterpiece Theater movies. Even though I thought Anne's father was a little bit harsher and meaner than he is in the book (in the book he's just proud, arrogant, and really foolish), and they changed some other parts. But Captain Wentworth was quite dashing. :p

Oh yay! You liked it too, I'm so glad! :D Yes, Captain Wentworth was very hansome and sweet, I really liked him!
Her father did seem kind of mean. I'll have to read the book sometime. Do you have all the Austen books?

Yes, he was. :p Which of her books have you read? Yes, I have them all. :) I always got them from B&N or Borders bookstores when they have classic books for about $6 each. :p

It's unanimous then! We all like MT's Persuasion and we all loved Captain Wentworth! :D

That's what I did too!! :D Three of them were even hardbound!

I own all of them but Persuation. I've read all of them, but I haven't finished Sense and Sensibility or Emma. I found Emma rather hard to read. My favorite was Northanger Abbey I think. Which was yours?

^Yes, that's an amazing deal! LOL, I love books at those prices. :p

Oh, I love Emma! :p But Pride and Prejudice, of course, is my favorite. :D Here are my favorites in order: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, and Northanger Abbey. I love them all, but some more than others.

Oh me too! Did you know that you can download all of them at Project Gutenburg for free? I downloaded Persuasion but I just can't read a book off the computer! I'd rather have the hard copy.

Oh, I love Emma!
Well, I just couldn't get into it. I had that problem with Narnia the first time too, but the next time, fell in love!! Anyway, I'll read it one of these days and probably end up loving it like the rest! :p Which is your favorite movie version?

I'm going to wait until I read/finish them before I list mine! :D

Okay, I saw the last part of the A&E Pride and Prejudice last night! I have changed my mind! The 1940's one is very dear and very funny and I will always enjoy it, but the A&E is far more like the book. I love them both, just different, as they are different interpretations. Anyway, I highly recommed them both now and I just fell in love with the A&E one!
Inkling, I didn't think that Darcy was very cute, but he had changed my mind by the second installment! :D And he is so sweet!!!
Snowflower, go get it from your library, you'll love it! :)

I did not actually finish the movie because I was so disgusted. I mat finish it someday. Wal-Mart won't take it back because the plastic is off.

I knew that you could find them free online, but I'd much rather have the actual book, too. Nothing electronic or digital could ever take the place of a wonderful book. :p But I'm glad you mentioned that, because it reminded me of some Jane Austen sites I wanted to check out.

Which is my favorite movie version of what- any Austen book or just Emma?

I agree with you about the BBC version. The second half is much better and I like Darcy much better in it (but the new version is still my absolute favorite...). :)

Care to share?

I meant Emma, but any Austen for that matter.

Well I requested the new one from our library, and I'm going to try to pick it up tomorrow, I'm going to watch it on Thursday and I'll let you know what I think. :)
