Fellow Narnia Fans, buckle up for a detour into Middle-earth! J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, the creative minds behind The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, were close friends who shared a love for mythology and all things fantastical. So, while NarniaFans.com is all about Aslan and the Pevensie siblings, we can’t ignore exciting news from Tolkien’s world!

The buzz is that Tom Bombadil, an enigmatic figure from Tolkien’s legendarium, will be making his live-action debut in Season 2 of Amazon’s The Rings of Power.

Who is Tom Bombadil?

This merry fellow, described as “older than the old,” dwells in the Old Forest with his wife, Goldberry. He’s a fascinating enigma, even within Tolkien’s rich tapestry. His origins and true nature are shrouded in mystery, a topic that has fueled endless debate among fans. What we do know is that Tom Bombadil possesses an unmatched power in his domain. The One Ring, which corrupts and controls nearly everyone who touches it, has no effect on him. He even sings a merry tune to dispel its hold on the hobbits Merry and Pippin in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Tom Bombadil’s role in The Rings of Power remains to be seen, but his presence hints at the show’s exploration of deeper mysteries within Middle-earth. Will they delve into Bombadil’s origins or showcase the full extent of his power? Only time (and Season 2) will tell!

The Role of Tom Bombadil

The talented Rory Kinnear brings Tom Bombadil to life. You might recognize him from the James Bond film Skyfall, the BBC Sherlock series, or even the Black Mirror episode “White Christmas.” Kinnear brings a distinguished presence and a touch of whimsy that seems perfect for the enigmatic Bombadil.

I am surprised they even have the rights to Tom Bombadil. As far as I know he does not appear in unfinished tales anywhere.

I wonder what horrors they will do to this character along with the rest. I think they will attempt another "origin" type story for the character, or at least drastically change the character we know from LOTR. Tom can be described as always cheerful, singing nonsensical songs, and seems unaffected by the worries of the world around him. He exudes an aura of joy and contentment. From what I have read this is not going to be the Tom we see in the show. I am sure we will see some of those characteristics spattered here and there, but I am guessing the overall character will be drastically changed, and like Galadriel in this series, will be unrecognizable to the characters we love from the books.
