Is anyone here familiar with 'Studio Ghibli'? I've only seen "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away", but the animation is spectactular and the films are simply jam-packed with morals and allegory.
 
I've only seen Spirited Away, but I can't wait for Howl's Moving Castle to come out on DVD. I was only shown in "art theatres" in my area, of which there are none nearby. I love not only the superb animation, but the fidelity to the spirit of the Japanese fairy tale. I fact, I like watching Spirited in Japanese with the original, more literal subtitles (rather than the more "Anglicized" overdub or secondary subtitles). It gives a truer picture of what the story actually is - rather like reading the original Grimm Brother's stories rather than the "Disneyfied" versions.
 
great dragons! his movies are great! i actually have only seen a few of them, but they are awsome... my brothers like them too... (all of them... the 29, 23, and 20 year old...) i recently watched 'my neighbor totoro' ... it is made, i think for the younger, but it is still so totally awsome!! (he watched alice in wonderland a lot, i thinks.. for that movie..) spirited away was good, again, it was a bit for younger audiences (not nearly as much tho)... it has been a while scince i saw that one, but i think i prefer mnt to it... heh... i wanna totoro... so cute... --- (im restriaining myself from saying more, for i dont want to spoil it for peoples who havent seen iut yet... )

I too like to watch it in the original language, as Japanese is one of the languages I am learning.

Miyazaki-san no eiga wa totemo subarashii dayo!
Soshite, kare wa ii tetsugakusha desu.

Translation: Miyazaki's films are really wonderful!
And also, he's a good philosopher
 
I am a big fan of Princess Mononoke. If you've seen the "making of" book, it's incredible what went into the design of this film. They also have poems in there written by Miyazaki himself. Though I can't quote exactly from them, they were wonderful and insightful tellings of the legends used to guide the writers of the final screenplay. This bit of lyrics from the soundtrack gives you an almost identical feel for what he said....

In the moonlight I felt your heart
Quiver like the bowstring's pulse
In the fair moonlight you looked at me

Beautiful and haunting but cold

I love Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies (this movie really made me cry a loud) and Howl's Movie Castle (Christian Bale also become the dubber!!)
 
I saw Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle at the theater when they came out, and Princess Mononoke is pretty good too. Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service are alright. I watched Totoro and Naussica on a bootleg because Totoro's only released in an edited version in America. Has anyone read the Nausicca comics? They're incredible!

I love Kiki's Delivery Service,Spirited Away,and Howls Moving Castles.


He's very good.
 
I’ve only seen Spirited Away, which it has been a while since I’ve watched it, but I actually remember enjoying it when I was a kid. I’ve only seen the English dubbed version and not the original Japanese version. While I’ll admit it’s a bit odd and out there, it’s actually a visually impressive and pretty unique movie because it was actually based on Miyazaki’s original creation which doesn’t happen very often especially in Hollywood.

I have heard his other stuff were good, so I might check them out. Japanese animation has a unique style, unlike anything we see in Western animation.
 
Really depends on the anime. There are also some that look like they're hand-drawn, but use CG. But yes, the majority do use hand-drawn art.
