With the announcement of Greta Gerwig’s involvement in the Narnia franchise many fans have wondered what this would mean for the musical tone of the Narnia franchise. Added to it the confusing statements from Amy Pascal about it being “all about Rock and roll” have left fans wondering if it’ll be more pop-rock influenced then the previous films. Certainly, Gerwig’s taste in music such as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and the like have left some ambivalent while others hopeful for exciting things to come.
However, it appears that producers of the film are taking a page form the previous film franchise and opting instead for artists based in the sub-genres of CCM, Gospel and Country. Narnia has had a slate of talented artists added to the musical tapestry of the classic series including Steven Curtis Chapman, Bethany Dillon, Jeremy Camp, Chris Tomlin, Nichole Nordman, Toby Mac, Switchfoot, Scott Krippyane, and Carrie Underwood. In this case of Gerwig’s Narnia, we have it on good authority that Joel and Luke Smallbone ( better known as for King & Country), and their sister Rebecca St. James will contribute four brand new songs to the soundtrack as well as a new recording of Rebecca’s song “Lion” from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Inspired album.
The leaked track titles seem to hint that we are in fact getting The Magician’s Nephew.
Further, sources close to the production indicate that Joel Smallbone (Unsung Hero, Journey to Bethlehem) is a front runner to provide the signing voice for Aslan. Further, following in the tradition of the Walden Series, Netflix looks to release an “Inspired By” album featuring some top talent including Michael W. Smith, Kristyn Getty, Leanna Crawford, Brandon Heath, Laura Story, Lacrae, Hannah Kerr, Nicole C. Mullen, Kings ( MHM), Casting Crowns, and Lauren Daigle,
One things for sure we are in for some great new songs, that will undoubtedly capture the essence of Aslan being “good but not safe” with for King & Country’s use of percussion, and it can safely be said that this franchise is indeed ready to do more than rock and roll, but inspire.
