Favorite Children's Books?

I'm currently expecting my first child, and have started to think about what books I'd like to collect for this baby and for future children. I'd really like to hear about the books you loved when you were a kid, especially if you continue to enjoy them now!

I'd like recommendations of books for younger children (for example, I loved Robert McCloskey's Blueberries for Sal) as well as for older children (The Narnia Chronicles, obviously, as well as things like A Wrinkle in Time).

It's okay if you don't know the author or the exact name of the book(s). Also, please feel free to recommend a book even if someone else has already mentioned it - I'll just consider books that get multiple votes as "highly recommended".

The Chronicles of Narnia.I've loved them since I was 7 years old,and I still do :) And congratulations to the baby! I can't imagine myself being a mother...but I guess I'll be one,one day.

Thanks, Daughter of Eve! No need to worry about the motherhood thing yet. I imagine I'm at least a few years older than you.

For future posters on this thread (and I hope there are some!), a quick clarification: I'm specifically interested in your recommendations of books other than The Narnia Chronicles. Since this is a Narnia forum I assume all of you will recommend the Narnia books highly, and they're already on my list. :D

Ooh! Ooh!

Goodnight Moon

and

How Tom Beat Captain Najork and His Hired Sportsmen (I have a copy!)
Oh, wow. I can't believe I'd forgotten about Goodnight Moon! Definitely have to pick that up.

I think I'll just plan on borrowing your copy of Captain Najork, POTW, since I'm not made of money. Have you seen what that book goes for on Ebay? Perhaps we need to start a petition to have someone reprint it.

I still like reading some of the little golden book stories. And I don't know if they still print them but Disney used to have these giant books with pictures from the movies for each story like Cinderella, Peter Pan, etc. I always loved those when I was little. My mother has several stories of me looking at the pictures at 3am when I snuck out of bed.
Goodnight Moon definitely
I'll Love You Forever
The Princess and the Goblin
All other George McDonald Fairytales.
Grimm's Fairytales
Dr. Seuss books

The Velveteen Rabbit
Little House on the Prairie
Corduroy
George and Martha
Curious George
Madeleine
Mrs. PiggleWiggle
Pippy Longstocking
Stone Soup
Where the Wild Things Are (although I don't know if you can find a new copy of this. it gets banned often.)
Uncle Remus stories
Mother Goose
Frances books, like A Birthday for Frances
Frog and Toad books as well
Amelia Bedelia
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
Heidi
Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates
And two of my all time favorites, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

I have like 3 boxes of kids books. My mother refuses to let me in the attic anymore because I spend hours rereading kids books. A lot of the ones I mentioned are series too so you can get more stories. If you want the authors pm me and I'll get them all.

The Velveteen Rabbit, certainly.

Rabbit Hill, absolutely.

Wind in the Willows, without which childhood just...ISN'T.

ooh, agreed Wind in the Willows is great. and if you like ones that will help them learn, the Magic School Bus books are good. That was the only time I ever remember having the slightest liking for science.

Wow, thanks, you guys! This is great!

OMS, don't worry about getting me the authors. I'm a pretty good hand with Google.

Incidentally, why does Where the Wild Things Are get banned? I've heard that too, but I can't recall anything particularly objectionable in it, and we read it quite often when I was a kid. Anyone know why it gets banned?

It usually got banned because it deals with some pretty dark emotions. The little boy lets his emotions control him. I think it got banned more often when you and I were kids and now with the arrival of Harry Potter it isn't such a big problem. But books get banned for the dumbest reasons. There were schools in California who banned Little Red Riding Hood in the 80's because of alcohol use. (Red was bringing her grandma food and wine)

I used to love Dr. Seuss. He's funny, and he gets a good a message through. And your baby will love the pictures. I see people have mentioned the Chronicles of Narnia. I think it's too early for for those kinds of books, and it might be a little too early for Dr. Seuss.
Just stick with the small picture books for a while, and then get into the others.

I LOVED (and still do) this little book called Peppermint. It's about a kitten who is the last of her litter, born in a candy store. Nobody wants her, and she is given away to a poor girl. It's so wonderful, and seriously heartwarming.

My other favorite book was The Poky Little Puppy, that's a necessity!
Congratulations on expecting, by the way!

God Bless the Gargoyles by Dav Pinkey
The Small One by Charles Tazewell
Nobody Rides a Unicorn (forget the author)

There's more, but I can't think of them now.
