take the -en away and replace with the letters in red.

ich gehe = i go
du gehst = you go
er, sie es geht = he, she, it goes
wir gehen = we go
ihr geht = you go
sie gehen = they go

now, try it with lernen (=learn)! :)

ich lerne = i learn
du lernst - you learn
er, sie est lernt = he, she, it learns
wir lernen = we learn
ihr lernt = you learn
sie lernen = they learn

My, so i did learn something during German classes  I love it that you Germans call the letter 'Y' ubsilon, like the greek!

My teacher told me, i believe, that the ß was actually always replaceble with 'ss', is that true?

I'll just lean back and enjoy this thread.

Ah, no, there's one thing, you could probably help me, Mrs. GG. When we toured Michigan this summer with our choir people in a summer camp we stayed for some days wanted to make us feel very welcome they did, too!!) and translated the dinner menu into german. It read as follows:

Ei rollt
Huhnchen
Wahrlich mein Gemüse.

In english:
Egg rolls
Chicken
Lo Mein vegetables

How did they land up with "Wahrlich mein Gemüse"?
Any ideas?

Dear Miz Frecklezzzzzz....can you help me out here? At my work the main language is german because of the tourists. Can you give help me with darf, durf etc? You know what I mean.
You can come in - Sie durven rein gehen or something like that. I can't use the " because my pc is not cooperative :p

okay children, quiet down, please, put! those! earphones! away! :p

"Yes, Miss Freckles," said all the children in unison.

Ok, I am liking this. I am starting a notebook with each lesson copied and pasted in a word document so that I can refer to back lesson without having to scroll all pages. Yay me!.

And here's my sentence:

du schlafst mit Das Katza, Bruder! ich trinke Milch!
(You sleep with the cat, brother! I drink milk. :)

I thought "right" was "recht".
Just since I've said that, "left" is "link".
"Auseinander" is away, right?

You can only say "auseinander" if there are at least two getting away from one another. "Away" on it's own would mean "weg" (sounds something like wheck).

But here's a question for the experts: When I formally adress a person by letter ( or email) in german I use "Sehr geehrte/r Herr/Frau xy". What would be an equivalent in english, if, for instance, you adress an authority?

... i guess not. :p

Sorry. I did not log in earlier. I did not see it. I did copied the lessons into my document though. right now I have to go to bed. I will be back tomorrow.

So say "I'm going to bed" in German (meaning to sleep of course, nothing else:rolleyes:)

Note, that this is a peculiar variation of "gehe". It may mean "I am going to bed right now" and thus the present is justified. But I can also say "ich gehe gleich schlafen", meaning "I will go to bed in a few minutes" and then the present form of the verb "gehen" in fact means the future. So, lacking the handy 'll abreviations, we use the present tense for both present and future in non-formal speaking.

Oooh, I didn't want to but in. Back there into the corner, Dragonchild. Sit down, be a good girl and shut up.:eek::eek:

Guess!:D

My location is specifically told above, but I'll give you some hints:
We can do all we do in this forum because the most famous citizen of the city I live in took some wooden letters, pressed them onto some ink and then onto some paper. And then he started doing with a machine and now we have amazon.com. Jonny, what did you do to us?
