CHAPTER ONE: The Forecasters Have No Clothes On
WAGNERVILLE, a recently founded city at the center of the Monongahela Forest of West Virginia. The year is 2042. No need of jumping around between galaxies the way I've done in "Spacebullies." Sir Tom the Dragon Knight, who lives in real- world Oklahoma, is unable to post any of this himself due to current obligations. I'm writing this prequel the way he wants the story to go, referring details to him for approval.
Note that this prequel, AND the Cavaliers storyline, may appear to have some connection to the never- fully-described antediluvian giants, the Nephilim, briefly mentioned in Genesis. There will be creatures LIKE THEM, but of different origin.
"How many of the latest ova look viable?"
This question from his immediate supervisor didn't rattle Teller Hardy. Cryogenic preservation was doing better every month.
"No worries, Doctor Yadav. All but three will be able to be fertilized once you have the optimum spermatozoa selected."
She shook her head. "You're allowed to call me Adrika. My husband knows that you don't have any improper intentions."
Adrika Yadav was holding back a sleeve card. Neither Teller, nor anyone else in the project, knew that genetic material from another planet was going into the research kettle. Least of all did she want Rufus James, a too-smart- for-his- own-good investigator, to smell an inter-dimensional rat.
Lord, I am so glad that the Solar Max has begun its downturn. Means that young Bruce can teach his Enduring Leopard class outdoors, and the students won't have the heat sabotaging their aerobic endurance workouts. What's more, the Durant Church of Christ isn't confined to evening services.
West by southwest of Wagnerville, the village of Durant sat alongside one of Oklahoma's lesser highways. Pulling in at the convenience store, Mister James filled his propane tank, and asked the counter man, "How's business in town?"
"Good overall. But between you, me and the county solar panels, I could wish it weren't good for Spirit Sight."
Not much needed to be said on that subject. The occult bookstore had never been confirmed as implicated in the ritual murders which occurred in 2037. Bruce Wallace had personally saved the lives of two underage girls marked for human sacrifice; and the local pastor had reinforced him in exorcising demons from the then-manager of Spirit Sight, who genuinely forgot that he had ever been a Satanist.
"Rufus! It's been too long!" The fourth-degree black belt gave his friend a back-slapping hug.
The private eye faked a few punches. Bruce blocked them, but it still took some effort. Rufus turned serious again. "I hope you weren't postponing your next trip to Okinawa on my account."
"No worries. That close to the tropics, Okinawa still has to catch up with global cooling. And the miniature Chinese palace isn't going anyplace. But are you here on business?"
"More or less. Tell me, did Spirit Sight reopen?"
"It did. After state police closed it down, the county put the property up for auction. The new owners appear clean; even the F.B.I. couldn't confirm any link to the devil worshippers."
