Gil-Galad?

Who is Gil-Galad? Because I don't remember seeing or hearing about him during the movies. I haven't read the books, though if he was only in the books, people wouldn't be able to get pictures of him.

Also, who is Elessar? and Elindil? I know that those two are mentioned in the movies, but they don't really explain them well.

I think Elessar is another name for Aragorn (someone correct me if I'm wrong) I think Elendil is Isildur's father (Isildur was the one in the film who cut off Sauron's finger that had the Ring on it, and was the one who kept the Ring against Elrond's bidding.) Gil-Galad, was I think an Elf, but Mrs Gil-Galad Took will have to explain that one. Hope this helped a bit.

Ya got Elindil, and, I believe, Elessar, right. But here's the scoop if you want to know who someone from LotR: READ THE BOOKS!
GilGalad is mentioned in them a few times.

It's been awhile since I've read the books, so I might have overlooked Gil-Galad. Unless he was mentioned in the Silmarillan (spelling?) because I've never read it.

at the beginning of the Fellowship he was there. in chapter 1. when the men and elves were fighting against Sauron

GilGalad was in the movies for a short time. He is more extensively mentioned in the Silmarillion, and the Appendicies, but he is mentioned in a poem Aragorn recited to the Hobbits on weathertop:
"GilGalad was an Elven-King..."

Gil Galad was only seen very briefly in the FOTR, where he's killing an orc with a spear. In the books, his name means " Star of Radiance." Gil Galad was the last High King of the Noldor.

Elendil was the last lord of Andunie in Numenor, who escaped with his sons ISILDUR and ANARION from Numenor's destruction. He founded the Numenoream realms in Middle Earth. In the movie, he was the bearded king who got thrown against the rocks by Sauron's mace, and his son, Isildur, was the one who cut off Sauron's finger. Isildur later was killed by orcs and the ring ended up in the river, to be found much, much later by Smeagol, who later became " Gollum".

Elessar was what Aragorn was called after he was crowned king...he was Isildur's heir.

Yes, this is my favorite subject :D :D :D
He is the brother of Finduilas. He was the son of Orodreth.
His full name is Ereinion, Artanaro, Rodnor Gil-Galad, but best known as Gil-Galad.

Gil-galad was the last of the High Kings of the Ñoldor-in-Exile in Middle-earth. An Elf of the house of Finarfin, he was named High King of the Ñoldor-in-Exile in Beleriand after the fall of the city of Gondolin and the death of the last High King, Turgon.

Gil-galad managed to escape the sack of the city, Nargothrond, although his sister was captured, and he fled to safety, probably reaching the Mouths of Sirion and then moving to the Isle of Balar. After the death of Turgon, the High Kingship of the Ñoldor-in-Exile passed to Gil-galad as the last surviving male member of the House of Finarfin. (His great-aunt Galadriel was still alive, but as she was the younger sister of his grandfather Angrod, his claim had precedence.)

After the War of Wrath and the end of the First Age, Gil-galad founded a realm in the coastal region of Lindon along the shores of Belegaer, the Great Sea. At its height, his realm extended eastward as far as the Misty Mountains, though most of the Eldar remained in Lindon and in Elrond's refuge of Rivendell. During most of the Second Age, Gil-galad enjoyed the friendship of the Númenóreans. A great Númenórean force helped him to repulse an onslaught by Sauron after the forging of the One Ring.

After the Downfall of Númenor and the establishment by the Elendili of the Dúnadan kingdoms in exile, Gil-galad formed the Last Alliance of Elves and Men with Elendil, High King of the Dúnedain-in-Exile, against the Dark Lord Sauron, who had survived the destruction of Númenor and returned to his land of Mordor. The armies of Elves and Men, victorious after the Battle of Dagorlad, laid siege to Sauron in Mordor. During the siege, however, both Gil-galad and Elendil were slain.
His spear was named Aiglos or Aeglos, meaning "snow-point" or "snow-thorn" or more commonly "icicle" because when orcs saw his spear, they would recognize it by its reputation to bring a cold death to them.

In the movie, he is portrayed by Mark Ferguson. And as you can see in my avy and siggy, this is how he looks like.

Hey Mrs Gil Galad :) do you have the Sideshow bust, by any chance, of Gil Galad? That was a great likeness of Mark Ferguson. I wish they gave him more than one second of screen time!!

I'm thinking about buying it. I have seen the bust and it looks so real. The Elrond bust is a bit disappointing, but the Gil-Galad one is amazingly similair to Mark Ferguson's Gil-Galad.
Yes, I also wish they had shown a bit more of him. How he got one of the three rings. It would have been great to see this in the prologue as well.

Plus Mark Ferguson had that noble look going for him. If I had kept the Gil Galad bust I would have mailed it to you along with the Argonath book ends. You can get the bust fairly inexpensively on ebay these days. The Elrond bust was sort of goofy looking. His face was too red and it didn't look much like Hugo Weaving at all.

Mark Ferguson is such a great personality. He gets sometimes even more attention than some of the other actors ;)
The Isildur bust is also very much looking similair as the actor. I saw the GG bust on ebay an as you said, it is not expensive. I'm thinking about buying it.
The Argonath statues have a special place in my room :) ;)

thanks for all your help guys, i haven't been on for a while, but thanks.

one more question though, what's the name of the star that galadriel gives frodo when the fellowship is leaving lothlorien?

anyways, i'm reading to read the book (started just this evening :p ), so that should answer some of my questions ;)
