Since we've had a thread devoted to fictional cahracters for president once upon a time, I thought it would be fun to start one dealing with real historical figures ( barring ones who were already President of the USA, I mean George Washingyon, Thomas Jefferson and Abe Lincoln for President... it goes with out saying.)
The only rule... they have to be an American citizen. Sorry, Twi-hards... Robert Pattinson is British, so he's out. Double for Justin Bieber... he's Canadian ( so no Pattinson/Bieber tickets). You also must have some reasons for your choice.
One of my choices, ( not including Jesus. He's already King of the Universe. Why be president of a country when you are already ruler of all? ) would be Astronaut Jim Lovell from the Apollo 13 mission. Granted he has been asked many times to run for public office and turned it down each time, I think he'd make a good president.
My reasons?
He has crisis experience ( Apollo 13)
Knows how to work under pressure and remain calm ( not just in space flights but in the military)
Is intelligent ( yes, NASA sent up monkeys but when it comes to humans they try not to send up complete idiots.)
Has military experience ( I personally beleive that if the President is sending our people of to war he should actually know something about it first, besides books, movies and news coverage)
Is remarkably humble ( I have seen interview after interview with him and he has said many times that he feels he did nothing "important" on the Apollo 13 or Apollo 8 mission, he just did his job. He also refused to wear an Admiral's unifrom in his brief cameo in the Apollo 13 movie when he greeted the "crew" as he left the Navy as a Captain and he would not wear anything higher. )
Leadership skills ( he was a captain in the US Navy. Led a flight squadron in the Korean Conflict )
An excellent public speaker.
Had to LIVE on a limited budget ( despite what people think Astronauts, esepcailly Apollo era, were not multi-billionares. They got paid a test pilots sallery. Their fancy cars and clothes were gifts from the companies.)
Hwoever as he has not had any prior poilitical experience his running mate would be... John Glenn. ( He's served in the US Senate and has a similar record to Lovell.)
What are your suggestions?
