How do you pronounce 'Eustace'?

My brother confused me because he pronounces it different to me, and I never heard of anyone called 'Eustace', so I got even more confused.

How are you supposed to pronounce it? I always said Ess-tuss.

The "EU" is from Greek, from a Greek sound very similar to French U. A proper English pronunciation of the character name would be YOU-stuss. That's why, in "The Silver Chair," the deaf Trumpkin hears Eustace's name and at first confuses it with the word "useless."

That's how I've always pronounced the name. I think I figured out how when Trumpkin mistaked his name...

That was Trumpkin, in Silver Chair when Glimfeather the Owl had just introduced them. But it's a good point - "useless" sounds much more like "yew-stus" than "ess-tace"

Oh, right! Thanks people. Guess I was too lazy to figure that out when Trumpkin said 'useless'. You-stus. You-stuss. You-stuss. hehe. Must get used to it.

Self-Appointed Definitive English Pronunciation Authority checking in: "YOU-stuss", as already mentioned upthread.

(As this is a Eustace thread I'm sure it will drag on and drag on and drag on... ;) )
