I am planning a fatasy...

I am planning to write a fantasy. I just need a little bit of help though.

Right now I am just on the brainstorming/planning stage. I have started with characters and right now i have been listing traits and then I will probably think about how I want each main character and write what major traits they exhibit. I was then thinking about doing a plot outline.

The thing is I dont know where to start with the plot =\. I just know that I want to write a fantasy. I want it either to be set a hundred or so years ago or now. I want there to be another world and the whol thing to be a sort of mix between the Chronicles and Lord of the Rings. I want it to be like Chronicles of Narnia by it being partly in another world and also by having many things I believe in showing in my work.

Any ideas are welcomed.

Though NaNoWriMo is over, you might want to try some resources from the fantasy writing forums there: http://www.nanowrimo.org/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=198

There are some sticky threads that involve world-building and things like that. Often, once you have your world set up, you'll have lots of ideas for your novel, though you seem to be trying the inductive approach. Either way, good luck!

I've responded a bit on writing on another thread, but I'll add some notes here for you.

I am currently teaching one student on building a fantasy story. Here is our approach:

1. We made a map. 33" by 25 and 1/2"

2. We traced out all the events of the characters.

3. We defined all of the characters (which you have already done)

4. We made a general outline of the story. Here is where it gets interesting, because as we build the outline, things change up and down the outline.

5. We have the general outline and the general plot. Now, we can start looking for a major theme as well as sub-themes.

When I was writing my SF trilogy, the first thing I made was this map. Actually, I was just doodling. That the doodle turned into a map just amazed me. Then a story began to arise just from the map. After that, you could say that "history" was made. The story just kept blossoming, meaning that it grew and grew to huge proportions: hence, the trilogy.

Hope this helps.
