The names of murdered players will be red. The names of hanged players will be blue.
The names of players who are on vacation will be purple.

(“On vacation” means that the player in question will be away from the Internet for an extended period of time and wants to make it clear to others that he or she is not being “too quiet” (one of the usual reasons to conduct hangings early in the game). If you would like to be listed as “on vacation,” post your request in this thread, and I will make the color change.)

Jobs:

Civilians: The majority of players are civilians.

Mafia: There are 4 Mafia, who get to kill one member every night. They PM the leader, telling the leader whom they want to kill.

Detective: The Detective PM’s the game leader every night with the name of one person, and the leader will PM him or her with that person’s job.

Healer: The Healer saves one person every night. If the Healer saves the same person as the Mafia decide to kill, then that person does not die.

Matchmaker: On the first night only, the Matchmaker PMs the leader with the names of two people he/she wants to be "lovers." If one of these lovers dies at any time in the game, the other one dies as well.

Gravekeeper: The Gravekeeper gets to pick one day (and one day only) on which all the dead players, or “kas (ghosts),” are allowed to vote. The Gravekeeper's power is not affected by death (so if the Gravekeeper dies before he or she has declared the Day of the Dead, he or she can still declare it). The Gravekeeper declares the Day of the Dead by PM-ing the leader during the night before that day.

Gameplay

This is a non-reveal game. A Non-Reveal Game means that when people die or are hung, their actual job remains forever in mystery... Well, at least until the game is over.

The object of the game for the Mafia is to kill everybody before they themselves are all hung. The object of the game for everybody else is to hang all the Mafia before they're all dead. During the night, the Mafia kill one person, the Detective finds out the job of one person, the Healer saves one person, the Matchmaker (on the first night only) picks two lovers, and Gravekeeper may use their powers if they want to. During the day, everybody votes on whom to hang for the last murder; on one day only, and, again on only one day, the Gravekeeper may declare a Day of the Dead and allow the Kas (ghosts) to vote.

There are 2 periods of the game: night and day. (The game starts at night.) During the nights, the Mafia kill somebody, the Detective finds out somebody’s job, the Healer saves somebody, and (on the first night only) the Matchmaker picks two lovers. During the days everybody votes on whom to hang at the end of the day.

We will be playing this game with time constraints. Each night and day will last 96 hours at the most.

The night ends when (1) the Mafia, Detective, Healer, and (on the first night only) Matchmaker have all PM'ed the leader, or (2) when the 96 hours are up. If any of the people with night-jobs have not PM'ed the leader by the end of the night, the leader selects a name at random to go to that job.

The day ends (1) when everyone has voted, or (2) when the 96 hours are up. If the vote is tied after the day ends, the leader will flip a coin to determine who dies.

If you have a job that involves frequent PMs, please make sure your PM box is open so I will not have trouble contacting you.

Do not forget to bold your official votes. If you wish to change your vote (you must do this before all votes have been cast), go to your original post and unbold the name of the person you initially voted for. Once you have done that, you may post again, bolding the name of the new person you have chosen to vote for.

Warning

Please be aware that some people are willing to do anything to win. Mafia games almost always involve deception on some level, so be prepared: in this game, you can trust no one. In the past, even non-Mafia have allied with the dark side. Please do not take anything that happens in this game personally, and remember—we have murderers in our midst

Hrm. A bit early to start the thread, usually you do that after you have all the players, but that works. ;) I don't see the sign-up thread around but I'm always interested in playing.

I thought if I started the thread it might be a fine way to announce to the forum that a mafia game signup was in progress. *hint *hint

Yes, and for your sake I will now add this note:

This is the official thread for the game. Please do not post here until the game has officially started. If you would like to play, go to the Mafia Sign-up Thread and Sign up!

"Fear the gods," my father warned me, but I stared at the sky and laughed. I was drunk with the laughter of my youth and I searched for the tomb without a door.

There is a tale both old and young that I had heard while secreted behind a curtain as it was related by a collection of ancient scribes of great virtue.

They spoke of a scribe who sought a buried scribe; the magician Setna who sought an ancient magician, Nefrekeptah, who held in death the Book of Thoth.

The wisdom of the gods he would not be denied and so he entered the tomb. There he was met by two Kas [ghosts] of the dead man’s wife and child and they did warn him against the stealing of the book. They warned of the sorrow it had wrought in their lives and how all three of them had been killed. Setna refused to be swayed even when the Ka of Nefrekeptah appeared to him and spoke doom upon the thief, warning, “You desire the secrets of the gods, the knowledge of the stars, and the speech of the animals, contained in this book I guard. Flee. The gods, who hidden from mortal eyes, will not be contained by you should you hold even this book. My life is a painting of their wrath. Go and come no more.”

Ignoring the voice of the Kas, Setna stole the book. And he read and was astounded at the words and feasted upon his new found treasure.

But the wrath of Nefrekeptah pursued him and such terrible visions did he conjure upon him, that Setna had one desire, to return the book of power. With much humiliation he returned the book and was given the task of returning the dead man’s wife and child to the tomb. When his task was completed he sealed the tomb with a spell that none might enter in.

The story fueled my desire for the book and I laughed at Setna for being so easily dissuaded. I forsook all the pleasures of life saying, "Wisdom such as this would make me a god, for I would know the secrets of heaven and earth." I searched the temples, talked with the scribes, begged words from the priest, and always listened when others knew not I stood so near. Yet, I was careful lest the son of Setna should hear of my questions and cause me to be hidden forever in prison.

“We just had to get stuck on an island,” wailed Lossëndil.

“At least it’s a pretty island,” BarbarianKing stated looking up from a computer. Bending over, BK scooped a handful of warm sand and playfully tossed it at Lossy.

“Do we have internet connection?” wondered WarriorSatyr, two eyes peeking interestedly over dark sunglasses. “If we did, we could send for a new boat. It'd make a great status on FB.”

“No connection, but I have some games. Anyone interested?”

“You’re on Rainshadow,” ~Lava~ laughed.

"Hey, people, reality check!" Loverble dropped a ruined backpack and glared. "We are stuck on an island with a broken boat--and, as we wanted a retreat away from everything....NO ONE IS GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR US! And seriously, pretty? A few rocks, some bushy trees and way too much undergrowth?"

“It’ll be like Robinson Crusoe,” CORIN THUNDERFIST II cried happily pulling out his pocket chess. “We have plenty of food on the boat, so no fear there. This will be awesome!”

“Or not.” Eustace C. Scrubb, MissReepicheep, and Glenburne approached.

Everybody looked at Eustace. “Explain!” Gondorgirl demanded seeing the stern look that was etched in their friend’s face.

“Our boat was sabotaged, and after we had left the port.” Scrubb said matter-of-factly. “If it had been done earlier it would have sunk us in the ocean. It happened at the perfect time—enough time to reach this lonely island.”

Silence. Supcious glances and a general distancing from nearby persons began. "Look, this could be a joke," Corin voiced hopefully. There were no reassuring faces. The horrors of being stranded on a forgotten island gripped them.

"Tell them the rest," MissReep said. "Show them Glen."

"There was also this," Glenburne held a note toward them. "For every joy there is a price to be paid." ~Egyptian Proverb. Death is among you. ~Mafia

"I'm cold," Lossëndil said quietly gazing up at the darkling sky. Nobody responded, but the sentiment seemed to be mutual. The group meandered off to find kindling and dry driftwood for a fire. They had no desire to forgo the protection of light.

It is now NIGHT. You have 96 hours to PM me.

Next time I narrate I'm specifically destroying all books in the prologue... ;)

Then I'd just have Sushi write another one. One called Against the Book Burners: Ten Reasons Why GG Should Be Ashamed of Herself. Afterwards we could all huddle in a corner, trying to rewrite The Lord of the Rings from memory.

Cool prologue to the game. And I hope we have books on this island.

I was just going to say, at least with this crew we know we're not going to run out of books for a looooong time.

*settles down with Father Brown stories* (I'll trade it for the Fellowship of the Ring when I'm through. Any takers? Somebody's bound to have brought the trilogy.)

Hmm, if I was there, you would have the trilogy and etc!

And a note to Glen--I almost had you carrying a large stack of books in my opening prologue.

Nope, not the trilogy but Narnia and All of the Rick Riordan books (Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles, and HoO)

This is such an excellent post. *Eats post* My dad could probably do that, he has read it every year since he was a kid.

Ooh, I recently read the Percy Jackson series.
