I think this forum needs a place where musicians can talk about things, like their favorite pieces of music and what instruments they play.

I have been playing flute for 7 years, and I really enjoy it. Some of my favorite pieces of music to play are the Wizard of Oz and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. I play in a more advanced band, and it's really fun to hang out with the other band members and just to work hard on our songs together. Our advanced band has gotten smaller over the years as people have less time to be involved, but each week that we meet, it's like hanging out with your family. Most of the band members have known each other for years, and practising with them is the highlight of my week.

Lol, well, I'm in the same band as Eustace, so she knows what I play already. For those of you who don't, though, I play clarinet, electric bass guitar and piano. I'm the most advanced on my clarinet, playing in the same "Advanced Band" that Eustace does.
With my bass, I play in more of an "Intermediate Band", and piano I take private lessons. I'm currently working on playing Owl City songs for piano, but for clarinet I love playing movie themes. Probably my favorite out of the ones I've been working on is the Pirates of the Caribbean medley that our band has. Such a fun song!
With bass, my favorite song currently would probably be Baby Elephant Walk from a movie that I've forgotten the name of. It's a very fun song, and all of us bass players have come up with some choreography for it. Pretty much, we swing our basses at different parts (flipping the neck and head up ;)), and during one really long rest we do little bouncing motions. (Bending the knees and popping back up, each of us doing it on different beats) It's fun!

Eustace is a girl? Thanks for enlightening us, Rainshadow

I play piano for a praise team at our church and sing in it as well. We call ourselves Vintage because we draw on older praise songs and hymns in addition to current worship songs.

I play classical pieces on the piano.

I like playing pieces from films- which really adds to the enjoyment of learning them, despite their sometimes difficult keys.

Playing the opening theme of Downton Abbey at the moment and totally loving it!

I recommend it to piano players- even if you haven't seen Downton Abbey, the piece in itself is stunning!

Well, I'm going to be in a piano recital tomorrow night. I don't like recitals, mainly because I'm playing all by my lonesome, and if I make a mistake, everyone hears it. I can totally do band concerts, but I just am terrified of piano recitals. :(

Aww i feel for you!! I hated piano recitals with a passion! Real scary stuff... i remember my hands were always shaking like a leaf beforehand and they looked white and patchy like i had some sort of disease... ahhh baaad memories :(

anyways sorry this didn't exactly help
hope you do alright and play superbly!

Yep, we were. :D I was playing German Dance in G Major by Beethoven, and I didn't do too bad. I could've played it better, but I sorta was blanking and freezing. I don't do very well in recitals. ;)

Ahh, i feel like i'm in one of my little detective moments, discovering you both know each other outside of this circle of the web ...
sad i know, ah well, thats me

anyways glad you are out, safe and sound, no more nerves- ah the joy of leaving a recital!

They're sisters. ;)

I'm one of those rogue musicians who has never really had official lessons so I don't compare at all to the rest of you. XD I play electric bass and acoustic guitar. I can play chords and play melody by ear on piano. I also can't read music. The only lessons that I've had are voice lessons.

Thus, this thread will probably go over my head a bit. XD

And yet, I am a music minor...

Sisters! Ah makes sense now :p
Man, i really need to get out more!

I'm a music minor in guitar so don't worry, you are not alone :)
plus i suppose i have become a music minor in piano since i've stopped lessons and play things i want to now

The recital wasn't actually as bad as I thought it would be. I got to use my sheet music, so that helped.

Yes, Rain and I are sisters, and reading through your posts makes me kinda wish that I could just pick up an instrument and figure it out without all the music theory part. Some of that stuff just confuses me. :(

Music theory- bleh!
Can't stand it! At one point my teacher tried to teach me some and all i ended up doing was counting up the scales (i mean the lines with the notes on) with my finger until i reached the note i needed to name and then said it... she soon gave up
Yeah, i mostly play by ear so i pick pieces i like and have heard before and that helps me get the rhythm, so i just use the notes on the sheet to help me along. Theory baffles me and always will

Hello, I'd like to join in if that's OK :).

I'm a trumpet player, and I've been playing [on my Bach Stradivarius] probably for about four years. I've played in two bands, one orchestra, and in church once.

Has anyone else played in church before?

I have not played in church, but one of my family members is a great trumpet player! I can't play trumpet though because my lips hurt too much after playing. (I think it's because my mouth is used to playing flute.)

Ah ok. Yah that makes sense to me, especially since flutist's embouchure seems so delicate, while trumpeters' really needs conditioned.

Anyhow, you should look into playing at churches! It's actually kind of fun, and it gives you experience, as well as helping you play in front of people without being nervous (if you do it enough). I highly suggest it for any musician! :D

I've always wanted to play the violin... it just looks so pretty!
so i started learning how to play the guitar in preparation for this but still haven't got round to playing my dream instrument :(
the problem is, on my island all people seem to do is either play the mandolin or bazouki...
