When I was a kid I desperately wanted a peach-faced love bird. Have you seen them? They are small green parrots with red faces, adorable.
I could not afford one at full pet store price, but I saved enough for a discount damaged one. The other birds had disliked him and pecked all the feathers out of his neck! He had just a gray ruff of beat-up feathers like a collar. He was about half price.
I named him Miles, and he was my good companion for about 12 or 13 years. Every morning he screeched like crazy to wake me up ... When I was in college, he caught some kind of bug and passed away. I was so sad!
Last week in the early mornings I was taking a walk along the canal in South Scottsdale, AZ, while I was staying at my mum's place and planning her funeral, etc. The first morning, I heard a screech overhead like my Miles! I looked up, and because the sun wasn't quite up, I could see only the silhouette of what looked like a stubby parrot body and round parrot head streaking across the sky, but I thought, what would a love bird be doing flying around Scottsdale?
But on my way back to the complex, with the sun up, I was walking by houses instead of the canal, and one yard had a big bird feeder in a palo verde tree, and four or six noisy peach-face love birds were duking it out with the sparrows and pigeons to get their share. Someone must have set a couple free, or they escaped, and now they're living it up pall mall.
It made me happy to see them on a sad kind of day.
