Narnia Stuff Brag

Hi everyone. I'm not sure where to put this, but for a long time I've been wanting to buy brand new narnia books. The book series I have is from different boxed sets, which I got from a used book store. They were very worn and very used. I've really wanted books with colored pictures. A hardcover set with colored pictures would be my dream but sadly they are expensive. I checked amazon and some of the books can be hardcover, but I didn't check to see if they had colored pictures. Some of the books can go as high as $50. Anyway, I found books which I had to order individually that have full-colored pictures and are trade paperback which I was told is a lot thicker than standard paperback. Also, the pages are made of something that isn't paper. It almost feels like a thin cardboard. It's really nice. I have a couple of the books so far. They are even numbered on the spine going in timeline order which is the order I prefer to read the books. Basically, Magician's Nephew is first. :) The artist, Pauline Baynes does such awesome work for the Narnia books and having black and white pictures doesn't do justice to the awesome art in my opinion. I wanted colored pictures so I could see the beauty of the art much better.

Most of the books were in the $5 to $8 range and the most expensive was around $18. I am not sure why they aren't sold together but I am lucky I was able to find them at all and they weren't sold out or discontinued or something.

I also want an Aslan statue but it is also too expensive. I found one on amazon for like $80 and the person is charging like around $25 or so for shipping. I mean, I'm sure it's worth it but I would be nervous about it breaking before it got to me since I've heard lots of horror stories about how people who deliver packages tend to throw them around, more so if you label it fragile.

Anyway, there's my small brag. Sorry if it's in the wrong spot.

Thanks for reading. :)

Well, such things have to go someplace.

There is a thing I would brag about having, if I had been able to keep it. Many years ago, I had been corresponding with Douglas Gresham, and my knowledge of the Russian language caught his attention. He had acquired a volume of all seven Narnian books translated into Russian -- and he mailed it to me from Ireland, asking me to read it, critique it, and then return it to him. I did all of that. There were just a few flaws in the translation; for instance, in The Magician's Nephew, the translator had decided out of the clear blue sky to change the cabbie's horse from a stallion to a mare.

Wow what an honor to get to borrow Gresham's own Russian Chronicles! Cool story, Copperfox :)

An honor it was. And apart from the few blunders, the man translating the novels captured the FEEL of Narnia very well. I recall another detail which was not a MISTAKE, just a judgment call. When introducing Reepicheep, the author decided not to retain the mere phonetic name of the character. Instead, he gave the rodentine swashbuckler a WORD-based name: "Khrabrikvost," which means "Bravetail."

I'm excited. I'm very slowly getting the books I ordered. I had to reorder The Last Battle, because despite the fact that it said there were two in stock they apparently either didn't do a good enough job to make sure they actually had any in stock and ran out sooner than they thought, or they sold super quick--because after like 5 days of preparing to shipping I get a message saying they cancelled my order of that book because they're out of stock. I reordered from someone else and so far so good--but we'll see. I have three of the books so far.

Some of my Narnia stuff:
1. A bookend set of Lucy going into the wardrobe on one end, and Tumnus by the lamp post in the snow on the other

2. an ivy leaf from a vine growing by C.S. Lewis's gravestone

3. a buckle from a centaur's cloak used in the LWW 2005 movie

4. versions of LWW, MN, and VDT in Chinese; of MN in Greek. I have Prince Caspian in French on order... Plus 2 different pop-up Chronicles books (one from Barbarian King, one from LionCon 2008)

5. More miscellaneous stuff: a wristwatch with a drawing of Susan on it (doesn't work), a necklace with a wardrobe, a bracelet with miniature mockups of various Lewis books, an LWW Christmas ornament (also from BK:)), and a Prince Caspian action figure (also from LionCon) minus his sword :(

6. a Pauline Baynes map of Narnia from the 60's (faded because it hung in my piano teacher's studio for decades before she gave it to me when she retired)

That map is really nice, how did you get a belt buckle from the 2005 movie? I have quite a few more Narnia stuff as well including the same bookends you have. :)

Kristi, the founder of the Lion's Call tipped me off that the buckles were going on e-Bay and I grabbed one! If you want to see one just like it on a youtube posted by another collector, here is a link.

Two Christmases ago now, I think, I got a 7-in-one Narnia books set from Barnes and Noble by way of my generous parents. It was around 25 dollars I think and it is truly beautiful. The cover is gilded with silver and gold and has a lovely full-color picture of Lucy and Mr. Tumnus on the front. Its also my favorite color- purple.:D I also have a box set of paperbacks that I got when I turned 10, I believe.

Other Narnia things I have:

A 3 box set of Peter, Susan and Lucy's Christmas gifts. When I was little I carried Peter's shield around with me all the time, but I also found out that these things are rather fragile and thus some of the little straps are broken. But I don't care, it shows that I loved them, and I was only 9 or 10 when I got them anyway.

A homemade Turkish Delight box from my cousins (which has had real Turkish Delight in it at two points in its existence).

A LWW/Aslan ball ornament from my parents.

Prince Caspian cake toppers.:D

A LWW ornament set with ceramic Lion, Witch and Wardrobe.

A Prince Caspian poster, which is a bit beat up. Despite the movie being less-than-stellar, the poster still looks pretty cool, so there it hangs.

A framed Narnia map with the prophecy about Aslan defeating winter on it. This is another one of my favorites, but, regrettably, it hangs on a nail and I can't take it with me to college.:( It is beautiful though- it looks aged, with yellowed paper and rough edges. I love it.

Oh and a 2000 Barbie doll that looks just like the White Witch. Its pretty scary, she's even got that evil glint in her eyes.:p

Wow! you all have such cool stuff!!! All the different books sound amazing.

I have my old set of books from when I was a child, minus the #1 LWW -- I gave it to a friend in Bosnia many years ago. I didn't realize at the time that they had renumbered the books, so that set has no #1 -- it has two #2's. I don't read those anymore because I don't want them to fall apart. I have a much later version of the set which I read if I am reading a printed page version.

And I have a gorgeous framed movie poster from LWW. I will put a photo of it here if I can take one without glare on the glass in the frame. I took it to the frame place and had it matted, and the chap who was helping me really guided me a great frame for it.

I also have a new print from Adri's Art
http://www.adrisart.com/
Which is a portrait of Mr Tumnus!

I wanted to have it matted and framed as well, but I didn't have the money to have it done as nicely as the LWW poster. :( I guess I was more prosperous back in 2005. Anyway, it is in a little black flowery frame which looks like it might be a tiny old portrait, I love it. If I can get a good photo of it, I will put that in here, too.

I also have a portrait of a steampunk cat from Adri; it's beautiful, too, and framed the same was as the Tumnus portrait. I want to hang them up together like a couple old antique paintings somewhere, but I haven't found the right spot yet.
