one of the main reasons i saw the movie PRINCE OF PERSIA was because the horse and his boy is my fav narnia book... i wanted to see the sets and costumes and see what they would be like as a possiblity for this future movie... in past threads people have said how difficult it would be to film this book due to the bad guys looking like terrorists and being too racist.. but PERSIA didnt seem to have any of these issues.. in fact it just heightened my resolve that HAHB would be an excellent film.... the exotic locations and costumes.. the flight through the desert and the battle scene... totally lend themselves to the big screen.. thoughts???

I would really like to see this movie. Mainly for the action sequences. :D No matter what, though, it can't be as beautiful as the Prince of Persia game for the 360. :p

Saw the movie two weeks ago-fell in love with it. :D
The best is the raider guy, with his stupid ostrich-racing obsession.XD
Tamina and Dastan are cool,as are most of the characters. The ending was funnily happy.

The casting of the Prince of Persia was extremely racist. My admiration of Orland Bloom went up by a thousand when I found out that he had turned down the role of Dastan because he didn't believe he was the right ethnicity to play it.

That's just silly. It's only racist if Disney Purposely was looking for a non-arab actor. Most likely they were just looking for someone with a name to slap on the Marque. Believe me Disney is the last one that wants any controversy. Anyway that's a Hollywood issue that stretches back to the days of the studio system. They are less likely to give a lead roll to an unknown that someone with a built in fan-base. that being said, can you name 5 famous Arab actors that could carry a big blockbuster on their name? I can't. It's not as we are talking about blackface. Now if we were talking about 'The Last Airbender' where they used yellowface, that was just stupid considering how many asian child actors their are.
I did think about HHB when I bought the blu! :D Unfortunately it was hard keeping the plot points straight , as my friends and I had to pause the film and make a chart to catch up. It also seems a bit rushed (but not as bad as VDT).

Please don’t say that my comment is silly. You don’t have to agree with it but don’t insult me.

No, I can’t name 5 Arab actors who could have headlined a blockbuster. I can’t name 5 non-White actors apart from Will Smith and Samuel L. Jackson and maybe Jackie Chan that can headline a blockbuster.

Do you know why? Because the average White male movie star doesn’t drop from the sky and become a mega-star. He built his star-dom via steadily working in good films, then high profile films, until he became a ‘name’… and he got the opportunity to do this because he is a White man.

Look at the kids that acted in the Last Airbender movies: the actors that played Aang and Katara were unknown White kids, the actor that played Sokka had a minor role in the Twilight movies , and the actor that played Zuko acted in the Oscar-nominated and critical acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire. The White kids were all relatively unknown who were given the opportunity to become stars; the non-White kid had to have already been a star to get the same chance.

Compare the careers of Jennifer Lawrence and Gabourey Sidibe or Jennifer Hudson and how disparately their film careers have ‘taken off’ after their career breakthroughs.

And on the topic of Jennifer Lawrence… look at the casting call for Katniss Evergreen of the Hunger Games trilogy: Caucasian female. Even though Katniss is described in the book as olive-skinned and specifically darker-skinned than her mother and her younger sister’s paler complexioned and that casting call could have easily been opened up to include Latinos, Hispanics, bi-racials, etc. But the casting net was strictly ‘only White girls need apply’ and true to type, the firs t photos of Jennifer as Katniss have her extremely tanned.

So please don’t dismiss accusations of racism in Hollywood as ‘silliness’. There is a vicious cycle in Hollywood that deliberately preferentially places White actors/actresses in the stardom-making-machinery at the expense of non-Whites and then turns around and goes, “oh dear, we need a ‘name’ for this movie and all the ‘names’ just happen to be White”. And when instead of criticizing what you see in the cinema or in your Bluray, you defend the Hollywood vicious cycle, you are not helping to make things better.

Goodness, I surely didn't mean to insult you! By 'Silly' I just meant it seemed a bit overdone. I don't disagree with you totally, but don't think Disney (the house that fears PC dogs) would have done it purposely. I think perhaps the Hollywood Ideal is out of habit, and possibly out of stupidity (audiences won't go to see a movie with out a white actor/-ess). I agree there seems to be a favoritism (as I stated with yellow-face). Perhaps, it is because American films, try to favor what an American Audience expects (or is thought to expect). It could also be that Hollywood is for anything that is 'safe'. Especially in today's Hollywood. That's why we have reboots, remakes, revivals, etc. When was the last time we had a movie that wasn't based on a previous successful property? When was the last time we saw a huge new star? Most big names have been in the business for at least 5+ years. I think maybe that's why 'Slum Dog' may have made as much as it was true to life opposed to the sugar-coated Hollywood image. Again, I'm terribly sorry to have upset you, it was not my intent. I don't defend it either, I just don't buy that Hollywood is pure evil, it's merely an over-bloated business. I didn't see 'The Last Airbender' due to yellow-face, which I disagree with. I won't buy 'The Jazz Singer' (1980) because the blackfacing was done WAY after it was considered no-longer socially acceptable. I certainly won't be happy if HHB doesn't cast a non-white. I also avoid any film that I find offensive for the same reason, I often time write to let them know such. I support what I approve and oppose what I don't. Perhaps prayer for a change would be best?

Then I suppose you do not watch any film about Jesus or The Ten Commandments?

or am I reading your post wrong, and your saying something else entirely

I've seen plenty of Religious epics and I've seen both the 1923 and 1956 versions of 'The Ten Commandments'. I'm not quite sure what your trying to point out, but if your meaning whites playing Jews , If it was made prior to 1975, no one was going to bat an eye. To be honest I've not seen a religious epic made after (except for 'One Night with the King'), but I understand both 'The Passion of the Christ', 'The Nativity Story' and' One Night with the King' all used a fair amount of non-white actors in those rolls. As they should, considering they are portraying middle-eastern and Persian individuals. But, to be honest, I don't really care about race as much as everyone else seems to. While I don't agree with always casting a certain group as another, I think it should matter more of an individual's performance. If a Chinese, can do it best, hire him! I know that won't always work on certain roles, but it should be taken in account.

I actually do not see any reason to associate Calormen with Persia, as a matter of fact. I think one needs to go across the Himalayas into India to find the root of the Calormenes. There are multiple hindu gods/godesses with multiple arms. In addition, Lewis was British which would connect back more to India. Have you ever read Secret Garden or looked at Ramdas in the Warner Brothers version of Little Princess? No, Calormen was rooted in India, not Persia.

If you look at it historically, the Middle East has been historically very much so still under the influence of the Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian spheres since Biblical times. The descriptions of Calormen gel with Persia to a point and then the similarities cease. The Tisroc claiming to be a descendant of Tash, the way that they treat higher Castes (the Tarkaans), their festivals, racial descriptions, are all more in line with India.

That may be so, however I never specifically stated that they were of Persian inspiration. I just merely mentioned the film 'Persia' reminded me of the sandy places mentioned in HHB. Brits were also in the middle east as well by the time Lewis was writing the Narnia books, as we had British Archaeologists in Egypt during the late 30s. I've read the secret garden and have seen 'The Little Princess', however Britain's main interest in India was turn of the century, though I don't doubt Lewis was inspired by both cultures.
