Colonel Brandon in Emma Thompson's movie of Sense and Sensibility has left us. Many fans prefer to remember him for his villain roles, and of course you need _somebody_ to play the bad guy; but he proved that he could be a truly _likeable_ good guy.

I used to only know him from Sense and Sensibility until I finally broke down and read/watched Harry Potter. I love him in both roles not so much because I think he was a good guy in Harry Potter but because he acted the role of Severus Snape to perfection. As for Colonel Brandon, he definitely was a perfect fit there too.

My main memory of him (a little while back...!) was as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Certainly worthy of a prize for most (melo)dramatic death! But all the things I've seen him in have been really good. He's the bad guy that you can't quite dislike.

It was quite sad news, I almost didn't believe it when I first heard about it, especially coming so soon after David Bowie and at the same age from the same cause :(

I mainly knew him as Snape, who he portrayed excellently. I will have to see him in some of his other roles.
