I am going to see The Screwtape Letters play here in Houston on Saturday!

My husband doesn't know it yet, but he is taking me.
:)
He is away on a business trip but gets home Friday. I hope he will be up for it.

Can't wait!

Yes, it's the one with Max Mclean. I hope it will be wonderful! Apparently it has been all over, according to the website, so it must be pretty good if it is touring. Yay! Can't wait.

How did you like the play?
My husband surprised me with tix when it came to California and we had a great time...

Thanks for asking! I loved it. Max does a great job as Screwtape, and his secretary Toadpipe was amazing!

I actually had tears in my eyes toward the end, when they had lost the patient ... when those strains of "Amazing Grace" were playing ... you feel like the guy actually had passed a test, had been promoted rather than dying ... which I think is how we ought to feel about passing on.

Yah, it was aces.

So Toadpipe was on stage too, eh? How many mortal characters were actually seen? If I were adapting it, I would have the human subject's fiancee on stage as well.

Only Toadpipe and Screwtape. It was basically a long monologue by Screwtape. Toadpipe stood in for various people as he described them; it was quite effective. Toadpipe was all demonized but appeared to be a young woman under her costume; as Screwtape hatefully described the way the fiance was surrounded by God's light that made her more or less untouchable by the demons, Toadpipe made this proud stance, and a spotlight glowed around her, to represent the girl ...

It was a good way to do it, but I think I would prefer a film where we actually can see all the characters. Toadpipe also represented (for instance) the Patient as Screwtape described him drinking and making bawdy comments with his non-church friends -- and she managed to get the look and feel of a guy sitting in a bar with his friends ... she did well for having no lines! Like a mime.

Does anyone know what the state of the movie version is? I got the impression
that production of the movie is in permanent hiatus just like the Narnia movies.

I certainly have heard no positive news. Which is a real shame, since a satisfactory adaptation of "Screwtape" could be done with a VERY modest budget.

I don't know it anyone would be interested, but I once got the Screwtape Letters as an audio version. The screenplay was from Focus on the Family, and they had Andy Serkis (a.k.a Gollum) as Screwtape. It was really interesting because not all of it was in letter form. Sometimes, Screwtape would actually be in the room with Wormwood, helping him deceive the Patient.
I really liked that they kind of added a story to the Patient as well so that it wasn't just Screwtape writing letters, but they really tried to stay true to the letters as well. When I read some of the letters later, I recognized a lot of what I had heard on the CD's.
