Sun setting in the East!

Hey, I just noticed this. Did anyone else spot it?

In the scene after the coronation, where Lucy and Tumnus watch Aslan walking away down the beach, it is clearly evening time, but the sun is setting over the sea rather than over the land - but the sea is meant to be to the east and the land to the west.

Yeah, mistake on the filmmakers' part. They thought it was pretty but forgot to look at a map. Of course, Cair Paravel is a what-do-you-call-it; a peninsula. That might explain it...

I did ponder that, but it looks like proper sea rather than just an inlet.

I saw this post just a few minutes after it was posted but didn't respond. I noticed. I felt and still do as so many others have stated its an error.

Once again its writers and a production staff who either don't know the material, don't care, or didn't pay any attention. Nothing more, nothing less. I wouldn't read anything into it.

I doubt that it really means that they "don't know the material". They just made a silly mistake. It doesn't detract from the story, and Hollywood is known for making silly accidents like that. (Like when someone gets into the wrong side of the car and drives off, or cattle walk off a train that's going at top speed.)

Filmmaker: Continuity? What's that?

HAHAHA!!! :D
Sometimes film makers do something for the feel of a scene/ moment, even though it contradicts fact.
Personally, I think the scen would look funny with the scene having the sun set behind Lucy, instead of behind Aslan. It's kinda like how a bomb goes off, but everyone has picture perfect make-up. Continuity is always a picky thing and can result from many a thing.
Artistic liscense (which I think the sun setting in the east is)
- A deleted scene ( In The Wizard of Oz (1939) the Wicked Witch tells the flying monkey that she'd send a bug ahead of them to take the fight out of Dorothy and co., of course it makes no sense as that scene was cut (and is now lost).
- Changes in production or trouble production. (in The Black Cauldron, Taran's model seems to change during the trip to the horned Kings castle, making him look rather ugly, and he has the wrong hair color to boot. Probably due to the films 13+ year history. Likewise In Oz Dorothy Gale's Pig-tales change length like crazy.)
- Lack of Knowledge, or purposely ignoring previous works in a cannon. (Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is guilty of this!)

You know, someone I know actually didn't have any idea about the Jitterbug scene. I had to tell them what it was. It's a neat little scene though, I did see it once or twice at one time.

Yes, It's very catchy as a tune! I know the stage version has the scene, but I wish that the actual footage would show up, but the fact that MGM had a vault fire in the 60s, the unstable nature of the film it'self, not to mention the 70 years it's been missing. Well, If they are still finding lost silent films, maybe someone somewhere has it...

i know this is kinda random, but nice quote! and back on topic, when caspian sails east in voyage of the dawn treader, the sun gets bigger. so maybe the sun is different in narnia... i don't know.

Yeah I've noticed this before, but I suppose if you excused it by saying they had the coronation in the morning it would work :D Even though it doesn't quite look like it's in the morning...depends on where you live, I guess. Some mornings are red and some are gold and blue :P

I've seen the actual footage; but I think it was the recorded song that played over the footage (it was ona tape I had years and years ago that's now since been trashed)

But back on topic, I don't think the sun setting in the East is a big deal; it's a goof, that's all.

That's the Home movie footage from a rehearsal session, your probably talking about the 50th Anniversary tape.

The actual footage cut from the film itself, is lost. The rehearsal footage is silent and shot far from the actual set.

I also agree that the sun set/ sun rise is nothing worth pondering long spans of time about.
