The Last Battle is full of symols and metaphors. I think that the ape is quite an obvious metaphor for the devil. After all, Isaiah referred to the devil as the "ape of God". He was a twisted imitation of God's image. Similarly, the ape in Last Battle, used the Donkey to imitate Aslan to further his own evil ends. What other symbols can you find?
 
Symbols from Revelation

I don't know how familiar everyone is with the book of Revelation in the Bible and the current evangelical Christian fascination with Bible prophecy, but Revelation refers to the anti-Christ and his prophet, a false prophet. The donkey in his lion skin in TLB would seem to be the anti-Christ, a false representation of Aslan, and the ape might be considered his prophet, the person who claims godly authority to do abominable, ungodly things.
