The plains are comprised of grasslands, or, at least they /would/ be grasslands if an unseasonable frost hadn't killed all the grass. The ground cover is dry and brittle and would provide scant grazing for any herbivore. Whatever watering holes used to be here are covered with a thin film of ice.
With only a few hardy trees to block the harsh wind, it blows fiercely across the low areas in gusts. Low-lying clouds scud over the sky, and they are not the white, puffy creatures of high summer either. Instead, they have transformed into lean, gray wolves and hint at rain...or snow. Against the horizon, hills rise up out of the landscape. They, too, look to be encrusted with snow.
