The Detective Stone Case Files: “The Case Of Alice…”
Chapter 1: “Alice Down The Rabbit-Hole…”
The faint wisps of smoke came from the lit end of the cigarette. The man holding the cigarette moved it to his lips as he stared into the abyss below him. The old sewer opening looked like it went on forever.
But, Detective Harry Stone knew better then that. He knew because the body of a young woman was found at the bottom of this hole.
Holding the cigarette between his lips, Detective Stone glanced over at the body bag the medics were zipping up. He could still see the face; it had a rosy complexion despite being dead.
‘Poor kid, must have been no older then sixteen,’ thought Detective Stone grimly as he took out his notebook and observed the scribbled notes he had written down.
Victim: Alice Cooper
Scene Of Crime: Was disposed of in alley then thrown down manhole.
Motive: ?
Detective Stone flipped to the second page of his notebook, his trench coat wavered slightly by his movements.
Suspects: None (for now)
Crime Discovered By: Construction crewmen.
Witnesses: None.
This was all Detective Stone had written so far. He sighed slightly and closed his notebook, glancing back down into the gaping hole.
‘If only holes could speak…’ thought Detective Stone grimly as he took his cigarette from his mouth and threw it into the black abyss before turning to leave the scene of the crime.
“Perplexing mystery, eh, Stone?” asked Detective Shaw, Harry Stone’s closest friend in the police force.
Harry Stone did not answer straightaway. He leaned back in his chair at the precinct and took another lungful of smoke from his newly lit cigarette.
Harry Stone breathed out the smoke from his mouth before replying to Gary Shaw’s question.
“No doubt about it, Gary. It was lucky enough to get an ID of the girl, let alone find her. She could have been there for ages if it weren’t for the construction crew being there. But, what I’d like to know is what made the construction crew work there in the first place.”
Detective Shaw smirked slightly. “Well, that may be difficult, buddy. The construction workers stated that they were hired anomalously by a Mr. R. White.”
Detective Shaw and Detective Stone glanced at each other as if trying to gather any information from each other but then gave up.
“Well, I reckon it is time I go see this “Mr. White”,” stated Detective Stone and stood up from his chair.
“Hope it will lead you somewhere, Harry,” stated Gary Shaw just before Harry Stone had left the office of the precinct.
