the freckled one's first attempts

Those are really good. I can't do coloring that well. :} I have GIMP 2.2. If you need any help I can try give you pointers. :} Also if you want to see some of the stuff I did with GIMP I have a thread of banners I did on GIMP.

Wheeee!!! Susi, you're amazing!!! ((Yes, yes, but everyone already knew that. :p)) I love what you've done with these photos! *pumps hand* Welcome to the group of awesome GIMP users!
Did you just use the "lightness/contrast" tool? Whoa. . . haha! I'm impressed! :D

I use GIMP too, and I can guaranteeeeee it's the best picture program free program out there. I could rant and rave pages and pages about the wonders of GIMP... *Is a GIMP freak* :p

(how do i make the pics smaller?? ahhh)
You can resize your picures using the scale tool which may-eth be found-eth in Image > Scale Image :)

here is another try... i just copied and pasted
(i'm probably gonna be beheaded for that...)

oh yeah, and it's a banner about my new book *yay* which is called either "my only plan", "invisibility" or "anyone" - take a guess

nextry.jpg
OOoohhh! Pretty banner! Awesome going! =D I'm guessing the book is called 'invisiblity', because that's the text that's easiest to read. . . but then again, you mightn't have made it so obvious and the story is really 'my only plan'. But then again 'anyone' sounds like choose-any-one-and-you'll-still-be-wrong. LOL
*faints from all the thinking* :p

thanks, guys...
but but but cleo, you must help me...! i just tried layers *shudders* in photoshop and failed miserably. i just can't seem to merge two pictures together... because in the "layers" box there's only the layers and backround stuff of one picture, so i can't possibly merge two... *wonders*
and my gimp is in german so i will get confused for sure...
hmm... *wonders how cleo makes such beautiful banners by messing around with grey buttons* *is sure it's all a conspiracy*
Haha! Layers and blending can be a bit confusing at first. . . I remember Audrey did a really good tutorial for merging two pictures together all prettilly, but it's in English, so it might be a bit hard to convert it into German GIMP (Not that I would know, I'm completely ignorant about different languages. :p)
*wonders where she can get a German version of GIMP* I'd be fun trying to make a tutorial in a different language and have no idea what I'm talking about!

*hushed voice* They're not just ordinary grey buttons. *lowers voice by a few hundred octaves* I have these glasses I pinched from a Italian Professer in Mexico which turns all the ordinary grey buttons to pink. That is the greatest secret to get the extra edge on your GIMPing. . . Pink Glasses. Yes, yes.

No no! Cleo wants the German GIMP now... Then I can fool people into thinking I'm all smart and can speak it. :p German characters are also most sophisticated looking. ^_^

DaydreamBeliever... I'll dig it up for you if you like. :)

I saw some on eBay for special... 52 chocolates a piece. :D

How to blend in Gimp
Theres many ways, but this is the one I think is the easiest
This is how I made this banner:
http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll176/CowboySunset/Chosen.jpg

1.Open a new white image in gimp.(top left corner,click in this order..File>New>width 500,height 250>OK)

2.Now you have a blank white base to work with.

3.Now choose 2 (for now,it works the same for more than 2)pictures.It helps if they're pretty clear, nice looking images.

4.Open the first one over your white base.(File(the one above the base)>Open As Layer>click your image>OK)

5.Click the icon at the very top of gimp, toward the middle that looks like crosshairs..like this +.

6.Click your first image, and hold it down, dragging it to wherever you want it to be.It can't be moved once you start blending,so you have to decide exactly where you want it to be.

7.Open your second image the same way you did your first, and drag it to the otherside of your white base.
Tip:To see underneath,go to the top left corner of gimp and click File>Dialogs>Layers> now move the bar down to fade the image so you can see underneath.Just remember to put it back to 100% opacity before you blend.

8.Now you're ready for the hard part.Above your white base,click Layers>Mask>Add Layer Mask>Black>OK.

9.Now your second picture will disappear.

10.Click the icon on the top right of gimp that looks like a paintbrush.Choose a small, round brush that looks fuzzy.
Go to the top of gimp, and double click the 2 colors there.Change both to white by clicking and clicking OK.

11.Now gently paint(holding the mouse down and dragging it) over where the second picture was.It will start to come through.

12. Keep "painting" untill every bit of the picture you want to stay in it is there, and the parts that don't look right, are not shown.
If you make a mistake, change the top colors to "Black",and paint on the parts you want to disappear.

13.Flatten your image above your banner (Image>Flatten Image)

14.Sharpen to about 20%(above the banner click Filters>Enhance>Sharpen>change the bar to 20>OK)

15.You're done blending!Save your picture as whatever you want to call it.jpg or .png, and follow the steps to finish it.

Now for the banner above,I did a coloring tutorial, added a texture, and wrote my text.If you need help with those just say,ok?

Just a quick comment..blending takes quite a while to get the hang of,so don't feel bad if it isn't perfect the first time.
Keep practicing and it will look wonderful in no time.:)

ääääööööüüüüßßßßß :p i'm smart! yay!
voice in head: you're german. your parents taught you the language by making bababa gooood giiiirl noises. there's nothing smart about it.
mf: :(

okay i have the english gimp now (victory!!! well almost)

thanks so much cleo!!! *gives cleo chocolates anyway*

EDiT: oh my days, it worked *faints*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Don't tell me it worked  The famous Freckled one finally gets it.

*Evacuates whole TDL *

yep i figured *shakes hand* you're my hero!!

do you have a tutorial for adding textures on banners etc? that would make you even more amazing

LOL.*shakes hand*
What do you like to be called, btw?:p

Sure!Its really easy!
1.First of all,choose your texture.:p
Just a tip:A texture can be anything really.I've faded sunsets, and random photos over pictures just to give them a neat look.

2.Open it as a new layer(same way as you would a second picture for blending).

3.At the top left side of Gimp, click File>Dialogs.

4.Click the drop down bar,and choose one of the settings.
"Multiply"-works best on textures with a lot of white.
"Overlay"-works best on textures with a pattern.
"Screen"-works best on textures with a lot of black or dark colors.
"Lighten Only"-works best on solid colors.
The rest work sometimes, depends on the texture.

Use the opacity bar to fade it if the texture is still too much.
And,of course,if a texture covers something you don't want, either blend it in,or use the eraser tool.
Thats it!

Hope this helps!:)
