The Look of the White Witch

I am very excited about the movie coming out and it looks great so far. However, I have one complaint, and it may seem like nit-picking, but it is bothering me.

I had always pictured the white witch as having black hair - mainly by the drawings in C.S. Lewis's book - and the look of the white witch so far is a total departure from what I had always imagined as a child.

I am very disappointed in regards to her look.

I would like to know if I am the only one who feels this way about this.

thanks,

Hey Aslan1981 (you share my birth year-well done!) judging by the trailer images I'm quite happy with the WW appearance. She has the extreme paleness which I have always seen her with. The eyes however weren't ot my liking. Far too black!

From what I've seen on the trailer I'm happy w/the way the white witch looks. I think the coal black eyes make her look very evil. They fit her very well.

I have to agree with Aslan1981. When my parents read me the book as a kid and when I read it myself I remember the witch having black hair. Maybe that's wrong. I haven't read the book in a long time. I should probably try to find it and re-read it with the movie coming out soon.

But I really don't like the look of the witch. She's too plain. The Movie version of the witch I mean. She's so... basic. She reminds of a certain character from the Lord of the Rings movies. I get the feeling they took heavy inspiration from that instead of the true design of the White Witch.

Look at this early concept drawing for the White Witch for the Narnia movie:

Narnia_1.jpg

I would rather have that for the White Witch instead of the blonde haired, normal looking woman with big dilated eyes. The black haired White Witch in the above image looks far more interesting, original, unique, and frightening than a big eyed Lord of the Rings character.

I'm really excited about this movie and possible future movies. I didn't read many books as a kid. I read LWaW (Lion,Witch,Wardrobe) and the Silver Chair. I read a third that I don't remember, but LWaW was always my favorite.

Watching the trailers has me very excited for the movie, but I hate what they did to the White Witch. She is too basic, too plain.

I can see where EDB is coming from, but I think there's a chance when ever you try to put an image to an evil, femaile in a story, who is atll, menacing looking etc they all end up looking a bit similar anyway..?

I think we may have a bit of a surprise when we see it all in action. That is my hope at least. We shall see how it goes though. I can see what you mean about the artwork above being cooler, but we shall see. I always pictured her wearing lots of white and having lighter colored everything it seems.

I hope we are surprised. I try not to bring my early impressions into the movie theater so I can enjoy myself pure of biased. She has potential at the moment. They stress the fact that they are fans of the books, so while part of me is dissapointed with the looks of the white witch, the other part of me wants to believe they know what they are doing and that maybe there's a good reasoning behind their actions.

We still have yet to hear her voice and the way she does her lines. It will no doubt be better than the absolute uncontained fury of the animated white witch. I read an interview with the actress that implied she plays it cold.

...Though I am somewhat in agreement as for the looks. The clips in the trailer she looks too flesh-toned. I'm hoping it was just the fact that she was in front of the firelight and it was the reflections doing that.

Welcome, EDB. I didn't see you post before. you should re-read all the books, you would enjoy it.

I think the White Witch in the concept art EDB posted looks cool, but I think Tilda looks cool, too. I can't wait to see it!

(Remember, I was depressed about Lucy having dark hair when I remembered the book saying she was a blond, but now that I have seen the kid in the previews and photos, I think she's perfect.)

Tilda Swinton is eerily beautiful . . .

I don't think she'll register as "plain" once you see her in action - it's hard to understand the full import of her visual presence from still photos. She's one of the most arresting film actresses I've ever watched. If you can find it, watch her as Queen Isabel in Derek Jarman's otherwise forgettable Edward III. I think it's a good indicator of her potential as the White Witch. I can see how one would think she's simply been cast as an evil Cate Blanchett look-a-like, but she is oh, so much more interesting than that.

As you can tell, I'm a big Tilda fan and I think she's going to be great in the movie.

at first, i was disappointed... but as I look at her more i like it. I like the black eyes. I mean, i amagine what it would be like to be glared at by her...

I was wondering if anybody else was going to think that that was wrong. My husband thinks I'm being nitpicky as well but I can't seem to get past the fact that she has blonde hair in the movie. Of course I'm not going to let that ruin my movie experience. It just seems that it would be more fitting.

yeah, that bothers me, but TIdla Swinton will make up for it in her proformance.
