The Public Schoolers.

I get the funny feeling on this forum that I'm the only one who attended public school. It isn't my fault. My parents did not have the funds to send me to a private school nor the resoruces ( or time ) to homeschool me ( which would have been detrimental. I was socially awkward and sheltering me would have done me no favors).

I'm just curious if any one else here went to one of those evil sordid dens of crime called a Public School and why. Why did you go to public school. What did you gain from it? How did you grow? How did you find ways of experiencing God.

I am actually still attending public school right now, I'll be done with it in just a bit over two years.
-Now my family has the money to send me to private school, but where I live the public schools have much more to offer than the private schools in the area and my parents just don't have the time to homeschool me. Besides my parents think that public schools offer more experiances.
-So far I've gained an education that fits to my educational needs because I'm not forced to take all the same courses that my peers are taking. Alot of my friends are taking a different level math course, but because of my school I am able to take a different math course that is more to my level. I've gained confidence in my social skills, sure I'm still extremly shy, but I'm no longer afraid of being in groups of people I don't know. I would have to say that most of what I've gained socially as well as several charateristics is all because of my time spent in public school.
-Through public school I've grown as a person overall, if it hadn't been for me going to an extremly crowded public school I doubt that I would be as mature as I am now. My skills as a writer and a musician have grown, as well as my patience which grew because of my peers and teachers.
-I'm not too sure how to answer your last question because although public schooling has shown me a fair amount of miracles and gifts that are no doubt from God, I wouldn't exactly say that I was able to find ways of experiencing God.

If by "sheltering" you mean the parents actually taking charge of their children's education, then yes, homeschoolers are sheltered. If you mean that homeschooled kids are loners and do no socialize, you are wrong.

I homeschool my kids, and I wish I had more hours in the day, more days in a week to fit in all the social and educational activities they have. These activities include socializing and learning with people of all walks of life, social statuses, culture, religion, and ages rather than just socializing with their own peers and age group.

I know this is not what the thread is about specifically, but I just wanted to clarify that because one of the most common misconceptions about homeschoolers is that they never get out of the house. It is actually the opposite, they can get out anytime they want and not only when school is over.

Ok, nothing against public school kids, really. After all, I did go to public school myself.

Ahh, you misunderstand me BK, and that is my fault. For ME, Sven-El, Homeschooling me would have not helped me, mainly as I fit that sterotype completly. I prefered reading to playing with other kids, so I wouldn't have really wanted to go play with other kids. Also I have some very severe Learning Disabilities and was able to get much more help then my mother could have given me.

I was a socailly awkward loaner, even at church. Though at best, looking back on it, I was more of a late bloomer, at least at school. However Public school offered me much more opportunities to socialize through music groups, my academic quiz team, and my Astronomy club. Save maybe band, I could not have participated in any of those activities otherwise.

Also because of my Public School Experience one of my best friends wasn't even from this country, he was an immigrant from The Ukraine. I was his only friend through out JR. High. He would say many years later, even when we haven't seen much of each other, "You are one of my best friends."

Also in elementry school I participated in an all school story writing contest. I won first prized for my class. It was one of the only two awards, save a Blue Ribbon in the Sceince Fair for my project on Mt. St. Helens. Following my winning the writing contest, my teacher selected me for a Young Authors Conference that was held at a very prestigious Christian College in my home state. Upon going to it I resolved to go to that school.

I went to public school from first grade through high school. I don't think it hurt me too much, but then this was a long time ago ... but my little niece just graduated from public high school last May, and had attended public school all from 1st grade, and she is wicked smart and got a pretty good scholastic scholarship to state uni and is pre-med -- so I think she got a pretty good education. Plus she's a nerd and still has a ton of nerd-smart friends, so I think she socialized pretty well, too.

In Poland i've always gone to private schools-the atmosphere is somehow nicer there than in most public schools(though, for a freak like me,all schools are terror).
In the U.S. i went to a public school in grades 1-2.That was a good school, but i absolutely HATED the safety obsession. And the parents(and some kids too),were VERY awkward around me-calling me "The Little Barbarian" behind my back.
That was really weird.I don't know if it was because of my heritage,or my general lack of obedience to the safety rules-in Poland, the kids are much much more freeer than in Marin County,CAL.Seriously,i felt like i was living in a community of porcelain dolls in Marin.
So far, especially in SOME Polish towns-the public schools are less safe. There's one in our town who smokes and drinks beer. Not that bad, unless you know he's in 3RD GRADE.
Also,we have immigrants from Georgia and Chechnya-who steal and are abused by rascist kids.Mind you,i don't have anything against the immigrants(execpt when they're stealing),but they don't have a very happy life.
But there are very good public schools too, where the kids and teachers are nice, etc.
I'm not saying either type of school is better-they both have weak and strong points.Every school expierience depends on the kids in it.

I think I went to something like public school when I was in elementry school, I don't know if it was public or private school though. I prefer homeschooling- less kids to pick on me.
I'm going to regular school next year and through highschool so I can learn to socialize I guess.:(

I went to public school for kindergarten because at the time I wasn't the best home school student. And besides almost all the boys being jerks it was fine! I made two really good friends and we always played together.

After 6th grade i may or may not be homeschooled,if i don't get into the junior high i sort of want to.
I guess homeschooling wouldn't be too bad,but i'd want it in English.:)

I've been homeschooled all of my 17-year life, and am now a junior. I did go to public school for Driver Education last year, and I must say I hated it. I couldn't five minutes without someone swearing or talking about things that I can't mention here (and wouldn't mention anywhere else, for that matter.) Even Driver Education was rife with liberal politics and bias, and I'd hate to see what they've done to history. If this is the way we're raising our kids, to be ungodly and immoral, then the future is looking a bit bleak for America, in my opinion.

There's already a thread, I believe, for home schoolers ... I think Sven-El sort of wanted to hear from people who are in public school in general ...

Yes, I was.

I should also state I was given the option in third grade when my learning disabilities were first being diagnosed and I was having problems fitting in, to be homeschooled or to go to a private school, despite my aprents lack of money or resources .For some reason, I chose to stay where I was. I think perhaps, becasue I liked me teachers a lot. There was only one teacher durring my 13 years in school who was a problem. Not bad, I say.

I went to public school.

My third grade teacher used to throw pieces of chalk to any pupil talking during class. The darn things hurt like crazy!!!! Of course that was back in the days when there were still actual chalkboards and real, honest to goodness chalk. There was none of that dry erase foolishness!

Anyway, my teacher had an awesome aim! She could nail anyone right between the eyes from at least 50 yards away!!! Ah! the good old days!!!:D

Haha my teacher STILL does that. She's pretty good at it too.
(BTW-dry erase boards hardly exist in Poland.:p)

well, I haven't seen one in a long time. I'm going to Poland to get another degree! Just so that I can dodge chalk from my teacher!!

I apologize if my post seemed out of place. I did want to relate my experiences in public school, but, no, I would not consider myself a public schooler.
