The Redwall Series

So talk about them! I've heard good things about the series, but my time for leisure reading is limited. One thing I've wondered is: are the intelligent animals in the books supposed to be carrying on their lives in OUR OWN world, unnoticed by humans? Or are they in some parallel universe?

A different universe with some similarities.

I used to love the Redwall series . . . but they're just the same-old stuff. His best book is probably Rackety Tam. I must say that I was appalled by the TV series, though. Total lack of strategy on both sides. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the latest one, Eulalia.

But it's probably just the factor that I've moved on. ^_^

Hmmm - I have about 14 of them on my bookshelf!! I loved them growing up. the only ones I don't have are the more recent ones. I think they were brill, even if it was pretty much the same stroyline packaged into different animal names each time!! And I did cry at the end of Martin the Warrior when I first read it.... :(

yes i have a few but i have read a lot of them i thought that they where good when i was in fourth grade so i thought i would see if anyone els had the same child hood memory.

Oooooh! I do! I love them! I've been really busy reading other books and so I haven't read all of them yet. But so far, my favourite book would be Mariel of Redwall.

Aaah, me too! It was sooooo sad! It was the first book I read, and then the ending made me want to carry on reading them.

I've read some of the books, and I've series. I think the story of Martin and Rose is so sad! I also like the love story between Matthias and Cornflower

I started getting the movies out at the library so I could see them...Because I enjoyed them soo much I decided I'm gonna start reading the series!

has any one read the redwall seris by Brian Jaquis???
Yep, my cousin introduced me to them...they're great :D I've read most of them...I just haven't read some of the most recent

They're probably in a parallel universe...humans just don't exist in them

:rolleyes:I'm just 11 so I guess its my age...I haven't read them for sometime
though...I just found Rakkety Tam in my school library :D

i somehow got bugged by Mariel, she just kept doing stuff her own way

Yes mine too! I've just started reading the redwall books actually. I got all the way to salamandastrom (the fifth book i think...) and I bought it but i left it in the car and it melted the glue so when I picked it up the pages spiled out everywhere! But Mariel of Redwall was my favorite, along with mossflower. Martin is awsome in that one!!!!
GTV, I see what you mean about her doing her own thing through the whole book. Personally I liked it. I think it was a outcome of her determination: To avenge her father and kill Gabool the wild. And no one was going to stop her, exept mother mellus(who only half suceeded:D)

Whoa...lol, I've read every single one of them, including the newest in the series, Eulalia!. And for me, my favorite of the series would have to be Racketty Tam or w/e the name of it is...its been to long since I've read that one...I'll probably go get it from the library after work. :)

I love the Redwall books! And I really enjoy the cartoon. I have read all of the books and my favorite was Rakkety Tam. But I really like all of them. :^)

I've SEEN the books, but I dread reading them. They seem too long... and too many to read! And after Narnia and Reep, I don't know about other talking mice!!;)

Redwall scribblings

Hi BK
If you are curious about the series but daunted as to where to begin, I would start with Redwall or Martin the Warrior (prequel) to just get a taste of the series. If you don't have time to read the book, check it out from the library on CD or cassette and listen to it as you drive to work.

One interesting background note on Redwall is that it wasn't originally written to be published. Brian Jacques wrote the story as an entertainment for kids at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind, which was on his route as a milkman. The vivid descriptions in his writing are a tribute to his desire to help his young listeners really visualize and experience the twists and turns in the plot. A friend sent in a copy of the manuscript in for him, and the rest is history.

My son used to be such a fan of Redwall series that one 10/31 he was an otter warrior, and another year he was Silverstrip the Badger. Although the general plot threads tend to get predictable after awhile, the messages in these books are positive, and there is always lots of action (so they make especially good reads for kids with active imaginations). One of our highlights of our family's stay in England during my husband's 2003 sabbatical was that my son (then in 5th grade) actually got to meet Brian Jacques at a booksigning at Ottakars in a city near Stonehenge.
