QSON: I am certianly not an expert. I have been doing alot of research on publishing however; so here's my two bits:
If your 'work' is poetry, I would say go for the gusto. Lots of magazines publish poetry for decent prices, and its not a complicated process.
If your work is a story/novel/manunscript (take your pic) I wouldn't try publishing it until you know alot about what your doing. The more you know, the more you realize how much work you still have to do. Which, while that sucks, it saved alot of embarresment later. Publishing is an ENORMOUS process, and even if you self-publish or publish-on-demand, you have to do all the marketing yourself; and thats a huge effort in itself.
With that being said, I would say entering your work into contests might be somehting fun and benificial to do.
(on another note; if you what write is essays and such, those might be something you could publish in magazines as well--but that still requires some hard work.)
But...and i know this sounds redundant...i DO NOT claim myself to be an expert. this is what i know for myself, and i am simply sharing that information.
