Rob ("Pholus the Centaur") Rice, who in real life is a performer at Colorado Renaissance Festival and lives within thirty miles of me, suffered a traffic accident this week. He and I had been developing a story idea. For those who don't know Rob, he has long been writing a fantasy series. His premise is: "What if Centaurs, and several other types of supernatural creatures, existed on a version of Earth where history is the same as ours, except that mythical beings are part of it. For instance, Rob had Centaurs fighting on the Allied side in the Second World War.
Corresponding over the past week, Rob and I discussed a new book. To preclude any contradictions, we decided that the new novel would be set in the Sixties, while presupposing background events farther back. A Centaur diplomat, heading for Southeast Asia as soon as the Japanese were kicked out, reasoned with the French. He told them, "Listen, the Tonkinese, Kampucheans and so on really aren't thrilled at the prospect of swapping Japanese rulers for French rulers. If you'll just accept this, you'll find that the indigenous people will appreciate being respected; they'll be glad to to have stable diplomatic and commercial ties with you."
Ho Chi Minh was delighted to get on board with this. He not only agreed to co-exist with the French, but extended an open invitation for Centaurs to drop in, on business or casually.
Here is where the actual story starts. A Centaur delegation is informally visiting Ho Chi Minh's office. The individual Centaur whom I show arriving is not the character whom Rob Rice expects to portray; thus, nothing my character does will contradict what Rob intends his character to say or do.
Since Rob never said Centaurs couldn't be Asian. The adjutant of Rob's character will be named Borai Negasi. Arriving first, he'll speak to a human secretary, who has a French name because the Southeast Asians DON'T hold any grudge against their former bosses. Here goes......

"Bonjour," Monsieur Negasi. I understand that your employer is dropping in soon. Can we assume he'll be beaucoup hungry?"
"For certain, madamoiselle. You know how much body mass even a subadult Centaur has to keep nourished. While we wait for his helicopter to arrive, shall we confirm this week's agenda?"
