Who is going on vacation? What's your favorite vacation?

When my husband's daughters were small, we took them on some cool vacations. I think we did two Caribbean cruises, went to Disney World twice, and took them to Grand Cayman island once.

Now they are grown up, and my husband has retired from his job, so we don't really have a time-frame for vacation -- and we don't have one scheduled. So I am wondering ... is anyone else going on vacation this summer? Or, what is your thought about the best vacation?

I know ideas like diving Australia's Great Barrier Reef and a safari in Africa sound great ... but for this thread, let's stick with vacations we have already taken or are actually taking -- not just ones we would like to do some day.

Go!

My favorite vacation by far that I've had is when I lived in South Carolina for 3 months. I might've already shared this, but I lived in a hotel with my family while my dad was working there, and we did all sorts of things. We specifically were living in North Charleston, so we got to go see all of the historical aspects of Charleston, such as Rainbow Row, Battery Park, and the very first Baptist church. Apparently George Washington attended that church a couple of times when he was in South Carolina. All in all, it was incredibly fun and I learned a lot about the East coast by living there.

That is wonderful! It would be great living in a hotel for 3 months with nothing to do but see the sights! And how cool that your folks took you to all those historic places. And I hear the scenery is beautiful in the Carolinas, whatever. That's very nice. Thanks for sharing! If you have some pix, feel free to post them here ...

I'm probably going on a family vacation the first week in August (I'm still waiting on a start date for my job and all) to parts of Oklahoma and Texas. There is a lot of Native American heritage centers/museums in Oklahoma, and I love Native culture, so that's why we chose Oklahoma. And Texas...well, I firmly believe in exploring your local history. Not sure yet what we'll do in Texas, but I hope it includes a trip to the TEXAS Musical Drama. :D

That sounds great, AK. I love Native American culture, too -- growing up in AZ, we were surrounded by a lot of it. As a kid, I collected all kinds of Indian dolls and arrowheads and home decor. That would be a cool trip in Oklahoma, checking it all out.

Who else is taking a vacation? Or, tell us about your favorite vacation you've already been on. It's hot and humid here in Tejas, and we're not going anywhere so I want to hear about everyone else's plans...

I'm off on my very first cruise around part of Norway for a week. Never been to Norway either so I am looking forward to that! :) Especially as I didn't really go anywhere much the last two years.

My favourite holiday for where I've been would be Mallorca, mainly for nostalgic reasons it being where I had my first abroad holiday and it was lovely. :)

Wow! Norway! That's so cool. I wish Doffen were still active here -- he hails from Norway and it would be fun for TDL'ers to meet up. (Like Norway is so small, he could just zip out wherever you are ... maybe not ...)

Anyway, have fun! That sounds very cool. What was Majorca like? Never been ...

Thanks! I don't go 'til early August... ooh, that's really not long now! :D

Majorca is a kind of 'typical' Mediterranean island - gorgeous sea views, lovely weather, and so on. There are also quite a few interesting places to travel to; but essentially it is memorable to me for the apartments area we kept going back to to stay: right close to the sea with a short walk to the swimming pool, beach, and 'town' area. 2000 was the last year I went - hope it's still much the same! - would love to visit again soon. :)

I'd like to take a real vacation (or a "holiday" like they say over there :) ) but I don't have any $$. If I could, I would go to Germany, specifically to München. I would also go to Netherlands and visit Vanessa if I could. :)

Both those would be great! My husband was born in Munich, and we have a lot of cool Dutch friends, like Vanessa. A European vacation would be lovely.

So glad you and your family will have a vacation soon. I remember seeing an outdoor musical about Texas long ago on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, but I've never seen TEXAS the musical. That would be such fun!

Oklahoma does have lots of interesting historical sites, especially since so many nations ended up there (c.f. Trail of Tears). I have happy memories of spending a summer there in OU in Norman at the Summer Institute of Linguistics and getting to study the Cheyenne language (which has whispered vowels as well as voiced ones!); and my language teacher made me a beaded medallion necklace at the end of the summer and gave me a Cheyenne name (it meant "Girl Student"). But Oklahoma is hot and if you go camping, be sure to shake your shoes out in the morning because there are scorpions there (and tarantulas, but they won't hide in shoes. I got to be a camp counselor up at Lake Texoma too when in high school, and dealing with such critters was quite an education.)

I hope to be in the Houston, TX area at the end of September for a wedding and at the beginning of November for a C.S. Lewis conference... Can't wait!

You should really go to TEXAS. Here's a link to their website: http://www.texas-show.com/ (their show runs from June-August, 6 days a week). I also recommend, while you're there in Canyon, to visit the Panhandle Plains Historic Museum. It's got a lot of neat displays about the past of the Texas Panhandle.

I've been wanting to learn a Native language, but I have no idea how or when I could. I'd love to learn Cherokee or Comanche. We're headed to Oklahoma next week, and I think we're going to stop at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in OKC since it's on our way there. We're also going to visit some Native museums/villages and I really hope I get the chance to try some authentic frybread somewhere! :D

Oooh you are making me hungry with the frybread talk. I would love to have that, too. No chance around here ...

I may get to go on vacation in November! To Orlando -- my husband is retired now, but to keep up some professional credentials he has to go to a seminar in Orlando in early November. HARRY POTTER WORLD HERE I COME! I hope. Have to see how finances shake out, but this is my plan. Yay.

Holly, thanks for the explanation, never heard of such a thing. Have Fur-fun. :)
