Tutorials

Here is a tutorial that I love. Here is an example of what I made with it.
bloombanner.png

Crop to 100x100 px or 300x100 px.
Duplicate your base and set it to screen, 15%.
Duplicate it again and set it to soft light, 100%.
Drag the soft light duplicate to the top of your layers.
Create a new color layer: f0b188, set to color burn, 100%.
Create a new color layer: 40382d set to exclusion, 53%.
Create a new color layer: 05133f set to exclusion, 54%.
Create new adjustment layer: Hue/Saturation > Cyans: hue- 180, saturation -100
(you might have to make it less depending on the pic you use)
add this texture
000306s0.png
set to multiply.

Hey, I tried it, Ria, but mine seems to come out dark. oh well! I'll have to experiment more. :p it's really ok, cause I found the whole Cyan thingy! did NOT know I could do that!!! so this was TOTALLY worth it! :D

I'm making my first tutorial, I'm not really good at writing these things, but I'll give it a go. :p
This tutorial is going to be about turning any ordinary photograph into a cool looking ordinary photo. =P
Basically turning this:
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg305/NarnianofGryffindor/Susanarcher.jpg
into this:
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg305/NarnianofGryffindor/Susanarchercopy.jpg

We begin by opening the photograph.
Next we duplicate it. Then make the duplicated photo invisible. We'll save it for later. Next, open Image/Adjustments/Hue/Saturation. Click colorize and use these settings:
Hue: 38
Saturation: 21
Lightness: +23
Click okay.
Next, make your duplicated layer visible. Select it and open the Hue/Saturation window once more, and use these settings
Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: +35
Click Okay. Set the duplicated layer on Color Burn. Afterwards, select the bottom layer and use gaussian blur around 1.0-2.0. You can play around with the Brightness/Contrast tool, to get your desired effect. :D
I've used this in several banners.

Enjoy and Good Luck!!!! :D

BTW, Paravel Queen, I like your tutorial it works great. :D

Hmm, that's weird. Maybe it was because I used a really light picture. Maybe you could just make the cyan lighter. I just recently found out the hue/saturation color thing too and now I'm using it like crazy.

Cool tutorial Josh, I'm going to have to try it sometime.

Ok, I've been requested to do the tutorial for this avie: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee145/SusanPev/Avatars/lopkkgmv.jpg

The first thing I did was resize my picture and pasted it onto a 100x100 image. I took the two different parts of the picture that I cut out and aligned them the way I wanted. I flattened the image, and then I started out with a coloring tutorial that I love. It goes like this...

-Prepare your base by sharpening it or bluring it the way you like. I always do this before the tutorial, since it ends up looking better.
-Take your base, duplicate it, and set the new layer to Screen: 50%
-Next, go to Create new fill or adjustment layer>>Hue/Saturation, and set the Master Saturation to +36.
-Go to Create new fill or adjustment layer>>Solid color>> and put in 001B70
on Exclusion: 70%
-Go to Create new fill or adjustment layer>>Solid color>> and put in
8FE1FF on Color Burn: 100%
-Duplicate your original base, bring it to the top, and set it to Color Burn: 50%.
-Go to Create new fill or adjustment layer>>Hue/Saturation, and set the Master Saturation to +50.

You may have to play around with these layers a little, depending on how dark your image is. I now flattened this out and then duplicated the new base layer. I went up to Enhance>>Adjust Color>>Remove Color and then fooled around with the opacity. I can't remember what I set it to, but it was probably somewhere in the 80's. I then zoomed in on the picture and used my eraser tool at 100% on a very small pixelage with soft edges to erase her lips, eyes, jewelry, arrowtail, and clothing. I then went to my little toolbar on the left side of the screen and clicked on the rectangle tool. Setting the color to white, I made a rectangle over the two pictures and then went to layers and set it to an opacity which I can't remember off the top of my head. Then I put this texture on it, and set it to screen: (I'll put this texture in later)

and I used Ringbearer as my font! and you're done!

Awesome tutorials, guys!!

Here's one for icons that I made... it's for PSP, but could probably work for photoshop and gimp as well.

Starting image:
kristen.png

1. Prepare base. Sharpen.
2. New Layer, fill with #0B275B, set to Exclusion 100%.
3. New Layer, fill with #EE0000, set to Screen 65%.
4. Duplicate Background, drag to top, set to Soft Light 100%.
5. New Layer, fill with #BAF4E3, set to Burn 60%.
6. New Layer, fill with #4F0B4B, set to Burn 35%.
7. Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. Set “Saturation” to –35.
8. Done! Merge all layers and sharpen again if desired.

Here is a tutorial that I made up, but remember that it will come out different for different pictures.

Crop picture to 100x100 pixels.

Prepare the base (sharpen, blur, etc.)

Duplicate base layer twice. Set the first duplicate to screen. The second(top) to soft light.

Make a new fill layer # 92fff9, set to color burn 100%

Make a new fill layer # 0d283c, set to exclusion 35%

Make a new fill layer # 561103, set to saturation 100%

Go to layer>new adjustment layer> brightness/contrast. Set brightness to 5 and contrast to 35

Go to layer>new adjustment layer> levels. Input only.
RGB- 35 1.55 222
Red- 5 1.75 222
Green- 10 1.12 220
Blue- 13 1.22 222

Go to layer> new adjustment layer> hue/saturation. Saturation only.
Master- 35
Red- 45
Yellow- -13
Green- 22
Cyan- 18
Blue- 69
Magenta- 0

Go to layer> new adjustment layer>gradient map and select the black and white one. Set to soft light.

Go to layer>new adjustment layer> brightness/contrast. Set brightness to -87.

Merge layers and put this texture on it.
texture.png
set to screen.

Here are two that I made using this.

Nice tutorial!

Here is a coloring tutorial that I love. Not made by me, BTW.

Crop base to 100x100

Duplicate the base and set it to Screen, opactiy at 100

Make a new layer and put in the color, #ffddcc setting it to Multiply, opactiy at 68

Make another layer and added the color #94ceed and set it to Burn, opacity 49

Take the base and Duplicate it, Desaturate it and bring it to the top, setting it to Soft Light, opacity at 100

Duplicate the #94ceed layer and bring it over top the Soft Light layer

Take the Desaturated Soft Light layer and Duplicate it, bringing it to the top.

And you are done!

I took a whole college course on Photoshop/Illustrator, I have forgotten half of it now (quite a shame too, since it was only last fall).

For the first tutorial I'm going to show you how to change this:
benbarnestutorial.jpg

into this:
benbarnesonlinebannerbigcopy.jpg

It's really simple, just some different lighting and stuff.

The size of this banner is 468x164.
We start off by duplicating the picture and setting it to Overlay.
Next, we take this texture
and set it on Overlay.
Next, create a new Adjustment layer, select Solid Color, and use this color #010b35. Set it to Exclusion
Then create a new Brightness/Contrast layer. And use these settings:
Brightness: -12
Contrast: 65

Then finally create a Hue/Saturation layer. Use these settings:
Hue: 0
Saturation: -49
Lightness: 1

Add text.

And you should get the result above. ^^

Of course, it will vary with different pics, so play around with the settings till you get the desired effect. :)

Another tutorial is the painting tutorial. We'll be taking this picture of Anna Popplewell:
annapopplewelltutorial.jpg

And turn it into an old painting:
annapopplewellpaintingcopy.jpg

Step 1:
Open the picture. (I know it's kind of complicated. lol)

Step 2:
Create a new Adjustment layer, select Solid Color, and use this color #775125. Set it to Lighten.

Step 3:
Duplicate the pic and place it above the Adjustment Layer. Set it to Overlay and use Gaussian Blur on it with a Radius of about 2.5 pixels.

Step 4:
Place this texture above everything else.
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg305/NarnianofGryffindor/Textures/paintingcanvastexturecopy.jpg
Desaturate it and set it to Overlay.

Step 5:
Take the same texture and place it above the desaturated one. Set it to Hard Light with an Opacity of 48%

Step 6:
Create a new layer, fill it in with black, set it to Saturation with an opacity of 23%

The blur will give the picture a "painting" look to it, you could also use (if you have Photoshop) the settings under Filter/Artistic. There are several painting looking effects under there.
Again, this will probably only work on certain pictures.
