Sonnets Here, In-House

Answering the question about Joy Gresham Lewis

There was an American Jewish woman, born Joy Davidman, who eventually came to a saving faith in Jesus. Along the way, she passed through a phase of trendy Marxism...and married a man whose last name was Gresham. She bore him two sons, David and Douglas.

Around the time that Mr. Gresham began cheating on Joy, she became a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia, and began writing fan letters to Mr. Lewis, who at the time was a hair older than I am now. When Mr. Gresham decided to break up the marriage entirely, Joy--being Biblically free now of obligation to the father of her sons--decided to GO FOR IT. That is, she resolved that she would travel to England and MEET her hero, Jack.

They met, and married. Of the two stepsons whom Jack Lewis thus acquired, David Gresham proved to be that type who, in the event of a divorce, blindly idealizes the absent parent; so, after Joy died, David pointedly rejected Christianity and left to live with his father. Douglas preferred the combination of Jack and Jesus.

Now, there's another dear young lady who deserves a sonnet. She will be able to read the title in Russian, which identifies her username here. If the content makes little sense to the rest of you, consider it an inside joke between her and me.

ДЛЯ "БЛАГОДАРНОЙ СДАЧИ"

I count the weeks until the day when I
Shall meet you here in Colorado; then,
Unless a blizzard pours down from the sky,
I'll show you sights that go best with a friend.

I'll show Tashonda "Garden of the Gods;"
And Glenda will see Buckley Air Force Base.
Miss Nederlander, I will give you odds,
Will find my church a hospitable place.

We won't let Lowell interfere with us,
When seeing where the festival was held;
But trusting God to be magnanimous,
We'll pray for true-life stress to be dispelled.

You'll see a state which holds much of my past;
Your future here, I hope, will be a blast.

I hope you guys have a great time!

Okay, I'm not getting any new recommendations, so I'm picking a new target essentially at random: POKEMAINIAC.

This sonnet, unannounced, may draw some flak;
I don't know my new subject, that's a fact.
But there's no cause to make a nasty crack;
I'm sonnetizing Pokemainiac.

This random choice helps prove I have the knack
For sonnets, and my rhyming doesn't slack.
Young friend, I simply took the time to track
Your posts, and found you 'neath a Union Jack.

I think you had some kippers as a snack,
And certainly your name is in the stack
Of Sounding-English tips; you do not lack
Advice on British forms of talking smack.

I hope that you will find the safest tack
To sail to the Lone Islands; do come back!

I've finally got around to reading that, and I must say that it's quite good, though I can't really judge, 'cause sonnets aren't really my strong point. One innacuracy is that I've never eaten kippers in my life, in fact until recently I didn't even know what they were.

If you will identify for me some food you do like, whose name has two syllables with the accent on the first syllable, I will edit my sonnet to put that food in place of the kippers. My sonnets aim to please! :)

I hadn't seen these last two quoted here, either, nice work, Joseph!

Who is coming to visit you?! I can't read Russian ...

It isn't purely to visit ME; she's moving to Colorado in search of employment. The Russian title on my sonnet says "For Grateful Surrender."

Since Grateful Surrender knows I'm not a psychotic stalker, she plans to let me show her the sights in and around Denver, like the Colorado state capitol building.

Littlgriz invited me to write a sonnet for her, but gave no particular facts about herself that she would like to see mentioned. So, as on one or two previous occasions, I have looked over her history of forum posts to glean ideas; and here goes:

Christina Broughton Sattler, Littlgriz!
Your name and username filled up one line!
How happy a coincidence it is
When people's names contribute to the rhyme!

I see that you've lived years in the U.K.,
Where what we call apartments are called flats.
You love a certain famous Broadway play,
And you have your own dog, besides two cats.

I also have had dogs, but now they're gone.
At least that makes it easier on trips.
I doubt I'll ever visit London Town,
But I at least can buy some fish and chips.

And when I have my fish and chips to eat,
I'll think of you, Christina, for you're sweet.

A special-application sonnet

There is a Dancing Lawn member who, by her own admission, owes an apology to several other members. I was among the first ones to whom she offered her apology. I accepted her apology, but she is afraid of NOT being forgiven by others. Accordingly, I offered to attempt a sort of icebreaker here in my poetic thread. She was the first to see my new sonnet, and she approved of my posting it for the purpose I have indicated. So here goes:

If I become annoyed at anyone,
God grant at least that my shots never fly
At those who are contrite for what they've done,
But only those who stubbornly deny

Responsibility for doing ill,
And make excuses for an evil deed.
Where there's remorse, I hope I always will
Give grace and mercy, which is what they need.

From that point, let there be correction, meant
To help that soul do better afterward;
This is true love to those who do repent,
To make the right path clear for them, not hard.

"Those whom I love, I chasten"--so says Christ;
And when He's chastened them, let's treat them nice.
