Sonnets Here, In-House

Just to keep my hand in

A girl born right before Pearl Harbor Day
Has taken here the name of "Susan Rocks;"
She isn't fond of hockey, but she'll play
On trampolines, with feet just wearing socks.

She likes the Twilight books; excuse my yawn,
I've had enough of monsters' love affairs.
But when she's finished reading "Breaking Dawn,"
She'll think of other things, like gummy bears.

With Loverble and LocoRoco, she
Finds many forms of silly online fun.
Right now she's writing fiction hastily;
I hope that she won't leave the job undone.

Young Susan_Rocks, you seem like a good kid,
With lively brain cells underneath your lid.

Wow, your poems are really good, Copperfox! A few weeks ago I read through this entire thread (it took a few hours:D). These are very interesting. Now I know a bit more about the other members and what they like...

33.3% sonnet: Get Well!

I hope your gouty foot is over "it";
your recent bout is news that made me sad.
To think a medication could inflict
such horrid side effects is just too bad.

I am no poet, just a sincere friend...
Where gout's concerned I hope that was the end!

Okay, my friend Loverble, since LocoRoco is also your sister, I shall have to give thought to writing a sonnet for her as well. If you see this in time, LocoRoco, you could mention to me some fact that you would like me to mention in your poem.

FOR SINGING-DRYAD
(partly marked with reminders of sonnet rhythm)

Some seven years ago, I rode a ship
To Poland, where I toured a Baltic port.
The women were all beautiful and hip,
And soccer-football was the major sport.

The women only got my harmless glance;
I had a living wife still at the time.
Years later, now, I'm grabbing at the chance
To please a Polish girl with harmless rhyme.

Old as I am, a logical pursuit
Is history; now SingingDryad shows
Her interest in that, and she's astute
At analyzing lines of Slavic prose.

So dobri denya, girl across the sea;
You're now a fellow scholar here with me.

Okay, Loverble's other sister has not given suggestions for what to write about her, so I'm on my own.

TO LOCOROCO:
not saying that anything's wrong with her person or her
writing talent, but asking her to think about something

Don't flame out, girl, nor fall into a pit;
And writing tales, please don't fall for the snare
Of Sixties hippie jargon, masked as wit;
It's overrated--I know, I was there.

The very question of "what war will do"
Misleads the hearers, makes them fail to see
That lumping sides together is untrue;
In most wars, one deserves the victory.

James Tolkien knew that ONE side may attack,
However much the other begs for peace;
So if aggressors are not driven back,
Their unprovoked bloodshed will just increase.

You are not living under the Third Reich,
So thank a soldier, not a hippie type.

My latest for Dayhawk

On her Facebook page, Dayhawk wrote a long poem titled "Oakwood Mountain," one which uses plenty of nature imagery to tell a story of loneliness and the desire for belonging. I commented on her poem with a poem of my own, in my preferred style:

Vivacious and ambitious Kimberly,
This Oakwood is a vigorous display
Of what you can achieve in poetry,
With promise of still better on the way.

Coyotes? Wispy lace? A wireless fence?
What feelings from your heart are hinted here?
Your longing for fulfillment is intense,
A tightrope walk to balance hope and fear.

I can't believe that you are totally
Without the comfort of companionship;
But you still seek that perfect "me and thee,"
The love that steers the heart upon the trip.

Don't let the fog dishearten you, dear Kim;
God does plan something for you--trust in Him.
