thank you to yeats for the headlines.
“I can’t stay in here any longer.”
Janice pounded her fist down onto the makeshift pillow William had made for her - hay wrapped inside his jacket. William merely sighed as he stood up and started pacing, just like he had been for the past three hours they had been stuck inside the barn. Down below, a horse whinnied, her nose sniffing the air for any sign of food. Alas, the barn had been ransacked the night before, angry protesters stealing the food for themselves.
“We have to find other people,” William looked at Janice sternly. “But it has to be at the right time.”
“Now is the right time,” Janice whined. “Nighttime, when no one cares who’s roaming the streets.”
William just shook his head and sat back down, exhausted. The pair had barely eaten anything since they fled their bombed city. He could still hear the whining of the war planes as they flew dangerously close overhead, bombs dropping like Tic-Tacs out of their box. But instead of light chatter, there were mass explosions as the bombs hit buildings, roads, people. The masked pilots, terrorists, and bombers that had taken over the United States were an unknown country, unknown personnel. All that the remaining survivors knew was that if there was someone running at you with a mask on - you needed to hide.
“Check the radio,” Janice said with a loud yawn. “Maybe there’s some news.”
“Everyone’s either in hiding or dead, Janice,” William said painfully, choking back tears. “We’ll check the radio tomorrow morning.”
There was a long pause before Janice asked, “What if we’re not alive tomorrow morning?”
comments/corrections are much appreciated.
