I don't think it was obstruction in the flue, I think the large log I had in there was just enough to redirect the smoke.

Funny you should ask about warmth. Yesterday, early evening, I tried to start a fire in my fireplace, and I did have the flue open, but the confounded smoke chose to pour into the room anyway. So I had no choice but to use the water I keep at hand for safety, and extinguish the fire.
