Such age differences were nothing unusual in Austen's time, and indeed for much of human history--because a man often needed time to build his fortune before he was ready to support a wife financially. And with infant mortality to consider, having a young wife gave better statistical odds that a man would have SOME of the children he fathered SURVIVE.

I notice you mentioned reading Jane Austen. You might be interested in a book titled "A Walk With Jane Austen," by Lori Smith. The author tells how she went to visit those parts of England where Miss Austen lived, or where the action of her novels was supposed to be happening.
