Jacob closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His mind was reeling. He didn't feel sorry for what he had done. No, he was simply amazed he and his mother had pulled it off. And afraid. Afraid of what would happen when his brother, Esau found out. Sure, afew months ago Esau had practiclly given Jacob the birthright. But still...
Ever since he could talk his mother had told Jacob the story of his birth. His mother, Rebekah, had prayed and prayed for a baby. Finally god answered her prayer with not one son, but two. The two twins, Jacob and Esau, were born within minutes of each other. Esau, a big, hairy baby was born first. Jacob, a smaller child with dark, wavy hair was born next. Jacob was born clutching Esau's heel with every ounce of strength his little body could muster.
Jacob had always been Rebekah's favorite. Ever since he was little she had told him what God had foretold. "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from you will be separated; One people will be stronger than the other, aand the older will serve the younger." Surely God meant Jacob would be served by Esau. Rebekah wondered how this would happen, but was sure it was. Even if she had to acomplish it herself.

Esau had the favor of his father and the position of firstborn. This meant he would recieve the birthright. Issac's blessing, land, property. All this would be Esau's when his father died.
Issac was getting old. He was blind and could scarcely hear. His old bones creaked and ached. Everyone in his family, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob, could all see the time Esau would takeover the household was drawing close.
"How can this be?" Jacob had though. God had promised Esau would serve him. He decided to take matters into his own hands. He was sure his mother would help him. He woulden't wait on God to act--his plan was as good or better than anything God could have planned.

Suddenly it dawned on him. He knew Esau would take revenge. Once their father died, which would be soon, Esau would get back at him. His brother might even kill him. Jacon would have to run; his life depended on it! Where could he hide? He jumped up and rushed to find his mother with a need to escape Esau's wrath burning through his body.
"Mama, you must hurry. I have to run before Esau returns from the fields and finds me here! I know he won't harm you, but he woulden't hesitate to hurt me--or worse. Where can I go, Mother?" Jacob asked his mother in a strained voice.
"Don't worry so much Jacob!" Rebekah scolded her favorite son. "I've already thought of that. I know just the place. My brother, your uncle, Laban lives in Haran. Your brother will never think to find you there."
Jacob hesitated, then spoke. "But mother, I barely know Uncle Laban. I haven't seen him since I was 10 years old, it's been 7 years."
"Sweetheart, listen to me. You'll be welcome in Haran. Besides, you are old enough to settle down and find a wife. You'll be able to do that at your Uncle's home. There are many sweet girls in Laban's village."
"If you say so Mama." Jacob said doubtfully, briefly pausing as he spoke. "Very well, Mother. I will leave for Haran at dusk."
Rebekah smiled fondly at her favorite son. "You'll thank me some day, dear. Now, we must hurry. Nightfall is coming quickly."
"Yes, mama." Jacob replied obediantly.
"Jacob," Rebekah called as he turned to leave the room. "I'll always love you, no matter what."
"I love you too, Mama."

Rachel rolled over in bed and yawned. Today, just like everyday, she would take Papa's sheep to water them. Even though the task was slightly repetitive Rachel enjoyed it. She loved watching the little lambs romp and play.
Her life was perfect--except for one thing. Her sister Leah was a year older than Rachel. Rachel's beauty far exceded Leah's, The older sister's stringy brown locks and half-blind green eyes were of no comparison to the younger's wavy brown tresses and sparkling blue eyes. But it was considerd improper for the younger daughter to marry before the older daughter.
Rachel sighed. Those stiff rules and regulations. Why did her father make his family follow them so religously? They didn't really matter to Rachel and never truly had in all her sixteen years. She only listened to them because that was what her parents had taught her.
