Aslan vs. Gandalf

If Aslan is the same as The Christ, which is what CS Lewis said, then a good wizard like Gandalf derives his power from the authority of the greatest good.

Gandalf, like Aslan, would have to gasp at the thoughts, "Work against the Emperor's magic??"

u all say aslan cuz he is from narnia..gandalf is really powerful. more powerful aslan i would say

i may like aslan more but...

man! that a wonderful debate this been. does anyone else choose gand. besides me?

I believe the answer becomes really easy, once you understand who "Aslan" is in Lewis' fiction, and what a "wizard" is in Tolkien's fiction.

Critical to note is that a "wizard" in Middle-earth was only named "wizard" by Men, Dwarves, Hobbits, etc. The truth was, however, they were actually angelic beings of a certain order (Maiar they were called; above them were the Valar, called "gods," though they were really angels of a higher order than the Maiar).

If Aslan is the Lord God of all creation (aka Jesus Christ), then there is no way an angel could ever beat his Creator. ;)

That would be a fight that wouldn't last long, considering that Aslan has the powers of God/Jesus. It would sort of be like Gandalf fighting the Valar or something...

In my heart of hearts I would have to choose Aslan, not because he is my favorite, but because he is a deity, as IceMaiden pointed out. I have a lot of respect for Gandalf's character though, but I think Aslan would win out. This reminded me of the part in MN when Jadis threw the piece of lamp post at Aslan and it just hit him and bounced right off and did no damage whatsoever.

Wow, this is really pathetic.

Hey guys, how about we stop arguing about characters from flippin' books?! (Because neither is actually real!)

So what if "gandalf has magic and has alot of power"; so does Aslan, but they're both from books.

I hate to break it to you, but you can make your characters do anything when you write them; that's part of the magic of writing. So it's useless to argue about who's stronger!

For the record (because I love analyzing literature!), both characters are Christ-figures (both are resurrected; Gandalf is "the White," which is a reference to the book of Revelations; Aslan is the Son of the Emperor-Over-the-Sea; the list goes on).

I only say this 'cause it looked like some people were getting too involved, and starting to get their feelings hurt/enraged.

Aslan vs Gandalf

First, I would sincerely hope that Aslan and Gandalf would never fight-- they are botth on the same side.

Gandalf is, as has been pointed out, a wizard appointed by men. Although he can wield a lot of power, he is by no means God. (Although I like what Saurman pointed out, the Gandalf was supposedly killed, and came back at a 'higher' magic level. Gandlaf (as I remember, been a long time since I read the books/seen the film) never healed anyone or ressurected anyone. Galdalf did not create or end a world (or claim such as Aslan did in SC). Gandalf's power is not limitless; it can be simply inhibited by a higher power.

Aslan is God, pure and simple. He can create worlds and destroy them. He can heal and ressurect. He is seen in his compartment ('Aslan's country' or 'heaven' to us). Aslan actus completely by non-instrumentality (no wand, etc.) Aslan can take multiple forms in multiple worlds. Although his death/ressurection is a central theme of the CON, it has little to do with the fact that Aslan is God. He has access to limitless power.

So, if it came to a fight, Aslan would win hands-down. But what I would rather see is Gandalf working for Aslan. Now, that would be awesome!

And you selected what I posted as an example of getting hurt/enraged LOL? Lighten up.

No, I was just using it as an example of the fact that both are Christ-figures...

I'm not angry; I just don't think this is very productive--people can argue forever about who would win, but then you have to go through all the posts to find out who's got the most support...Why not make this a poll? That'd make it a lot easier to see who likes whom.
