Atlantis: Could it have really been...

ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE

Disney took a huge risk (and sadly lost) with this wonderful little movie. It also has recieved heavy criticism from may christain critics claiming this film to be a "pagan, boring adventure". I have evidence quite to the contrary. these same critics fail to mention the three biblical referneces(one which is a main theme in the movie) and the strong moral aspect of the film(but thats typical of disney). in the next few posts I will explain in detail the three biblical referances and how they affect the film itself:

HOW ATLANTIS COULD FIT IN THE BIBLE
The Film depicts atlantis' destruction as a giant wave sinking the city itself. what caused this catacylsmic event? The great flood of course! Kida even asks milo thatch :"when did the flood waters recede?"
But how could this be? according to the bible: when adam and eve sinned the race of man was doomed to death. however after adam and eve's death several thousand years passed, allowing empires to be built and destoroyed. one such empire could have been atlantis. the bible also tells of giants and mighty men of renown but thats for another essay ;)

That's some interesting speculation. By the way it's not the only time people have speculated that the Atlanteans had discovered atomic power...and by extension NUCLEAR WEAPONS...that eventually led to their downfall.

It's interesting to note that the movie did depict Atlantis as a pagan society. They worshiped their ancestors. I really liked the first movie (There was a lot of inaccuracies, but that's Disney for you), however, I wouldn't call it a 'boring adventure'.

Joe, I would hardly rely on a Disney movie as your structure or co-structure of debate. Giants and mighty men? I don't get why you put that in there. Was it just filler-material? Do you think that these 'giants and mighty men of renown' were the huge machines in the movie that put a shield over the Lost City of Atlantis in order to save it from a terrible flaming death of lava?

That's some interesting speculation. By the way it's not the only time people have speculated that the Atlanteans had discovered atomic power...and by extension NUCLEAR WEAPONS...that eventually led to their downfall.

Yes, but sadly, it's only speculation. It's also interesting to note that the Romans were on the brink of a massive industrial revolution, but, like so many other great civilizations, Rome fell apart. :p

im not rellying on the movie I just saw the movie and figured I would write a half review half essay...we all know how that will turn out.

My apologies for the mix up on the review /essay :(

no i just said thats for another essay having nothing to do with atlantis :D

Just a thought: Since this is most likely an issue of debate, shouldn't this be moved to the Socratic Club?

Looking forward to what else you have to say, Joe.

I don't believe Atlantis existed.I think its a facinating idea (haven't seen the movie),but a fantasy, like Narnia or Middle Earth.

CAREFUL!! Don't let that kind of talk get back to Santa Claus or he won't bring you presents from the North Pole! :D

wow...I was considering closing up shop for this thread...yeah maybe this should be sent to the socratic club...I should have slpit my atlantis:the lost empire discussion and my essay into seperate threads :D

Well just because Atlantis has yet to be discovered doesn't mean that the possibilities of it existing can be ruled out. Its the same with "God." Just because scientist haven't proven his existence doesn't mean that he doesn't exist. Well, at least for us believers. :)

a good point but I dont think we should compare Atlantis with God. Like jack jones stated in my fic.(yes that was just an excuse to get you to read it...im os bad :D) but as far as atlantis being proven, this essay is little more than a theory.

the idea of Atlantis always fascinated me. I hope it will be true. There have been so many speculations. On discovery channel they even had a docu if Atlantis could have been Kreta. I don't know. But imagine...a huge continent which has disappeared.

This doesn't fit into the descussion(ps?) but I have to say this.

I loved the movie atlantis. I used to have dreams or imagine these made up worlds with these weird made-up gods and these strange powers and magical chants. I never worshiped any of them of course (I am a strong christian/catholic and proud of it). but they were fun to picture and think about. Then when atlantis came out I was shocked; the world, atlantis was EXACTLY like the world I had created. I loved it.

I hade to get that out.

Comparing God to Atlantis wasn't my intention. As most of us know, God is a spiritual being and Atlantis may have been a highly techonological advanced Island or continent. I just used God as an example because the proof of his existence is much subjected to debate in the world of science as is Atlantis in the world of archeology.

maggie, when i was a kid, I always imagined how Atlantis would look like. The mystery around it is so great. High technics and maybe people who were their time ahead. The idea is fascinating. And it is funny you created the word and it was exactly how you imagined!

atlantis is a theory...and it has in it the magic that everyone sees most in fairy tales. Im glad ataltnis hasnt been discovered yet because then it would lose its magic. without fairytales what can you believe in?

That is true. The mystery is what makes it even more fascinating. I think it won't be found anymore if it would exist. Because with the technology we have today it shouldn't be too difficult to discover it. What was the reason Atlantis disappeared? A giant tsunami?

According to Plato, after failing to invade Athens, Atlantis sunk into the ocean overnight. Maybe Poseidon had something to do with it? Ok. Ok. It might have been a Tsunami. I just like having fun with Greek Mythology.:D

I believe Atlantis is more of a myth than a theory.

I read a part of it at wikipedia. Plato was convinced it was real. They even think Antarctica is located at the place where Atlantis once used to be. i do believe it is a myth either. They never found anything of it. Not even a stone.

I dont think so...I think the atlantis plato refered to was really The minoan civilization. The atlantis most people think of would probably be pre-flood. when the great flood dessimatied the earth atlantis sank, along with a few dozen other empires.
