Atlantis: Could it have really been...

I read a part of it at wikipedia. Plato was convinced it was real. They even think Antarctica is located at the place where Atlantis once used to be. i do believe it is a myth either. They never found anything of it. Not even a stone.

Some say that it was close to Greece, other think it might have been in the Caribbean and that the Bermuda Triangle had something to do with it. lol
I love all of this speculation!

absolutely! :D

I was asking because the destruction of Atlantis happened 9000 years before Plato was born and he was abour around 430 BC. And if according to the bible mankind was created around 4000 bc that would rule out the flood.
Again, I could be way off basis here so feel free to prove me other wise. I have no problem.

Oddly enough there is an Atlantean tie to Narnia. The box with the soil in it, which I referred to as the "Casket of Baktar", came from Atlantis and that soil made it possible to travel to the wood between worlds. That's how the rings of transit were made that appeared in The Magician's Nephew.

My story THE CASKET OF BAKTAR engages in speculation on how that worked and how the power ultimately undid Atlantis.

Not to shamelessly plug it, but the novelette is here: http://www.royalmagi.org/stories/baktar.pdf

Atlantis is probably one of the most theorized lost civilizations in the history of Earth. It may or may not have existed as written by Plato and others. Of couse, technologically advanced by Plato's standards is a lot different than our standards so I wonder if as the centuries went on, the societies' views on Atlantis' advancement was affected?

But if it was swallowed up by the oceans, that would require a large-scale natural disaster. Something on the order of a nearby massive volcanic eruption or Richter Level 10 earthquake in the vicinity that would have not only split Atlantis potentially in half, but also sank most of it into the ocean. And if in the Atlantic Ocean, the millenia of expansion would have pulled it down under the sea.

Could it have existed? Yes, but not necessarily how it has been portrayed in legend and lore.

My point exactly bob, the only thing I can think of that would be cataclysmic enough would quite possibly be the Great Flood. only that could have totaly sank atlantis. but this suggestion means that no one would possibly be a wittness(save noah) but we dont really know how many great civilizations existed pre-flood. Nimrod had apparently built himself a sizeable empire as the bible states but im not suggesting it could be atlantis.

Trying not to get into a Great Flood debate here, but the Biblical description of the Great Flood is impossible. It was why I left it out of my post.

The Flood supposedly covered the highest mountain by a bit more than 20 feet. That would put the Ark way up at an altitude of nearly 29,050 ft., an impossible altitude for anyone or animal to exist for too long, for plants to exist, for an atmosphere to continue, and for waters to stay liquid.

And assuming Atlantis was antedeluvian, why should it be focused on of all other civilizations that perished as a result? Wouldn't people have just stated that Atlantis perished in the Great Flood?

the flood waters receded! the bible clearly states this. and if you would go so far as to say that a flood couldnt just go down then I tell you with God all things are possible: If you wanna get into a debate about God then meet me in the socratic club! :(
